The Assistant Deputy Minister participates in the development, planning and implementation of policies and strategies that promote culture and heritage, Official Languages, translations, Elders & Youth, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit as a means to promote, protect and preserve culture, language and heritage for Nunavummiut. The incumbent contributes to the provision of efficient and effective management, delivery and administration of departmental legislation, programs, and services to ensure maximum utilization of resources. The incumbent reviews and negotiates territorial and federal funding contracts to ensure adequate financing for cultural program delivery. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for fostering development of the Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit approaches to preserve and enhance the Inuktut language and cultural identity.The role of the Assistant Deputy Minister is to provide overall direction and supervise the Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Official Languages, Translation Bureau, Heritage, and Elders & Youth division staff in carrying out their assignments and in achieving the department’s objectives. The incumbent is also responsible for providing broad advice and co-ordination in culture and heritage program areas and assists in developing all major policies, legislation and financial administration including high quality and co-ordination of departmental Cabinet submissions and presentations and responses to the Assembly related to culture and heritage. This position will be in an Acting Deputy Minister capacity when the Deputy Minister is absent from duty.The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized university degree in Inuit/ Indigenous Studies, Business Administration, Social Sciences, or related field with a minimum of five years related experience as a senior manager in the public or private sector and three years of progressive managerial experience in culture and language policy development. This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.Acceptable combinations of education and experience may be considered for this position.
