Job Description

Nasittuq provides Operation & Maintenance services for the North Warning System (NWS). The NWS is a joint Canada and United States early-warning radar system with 47 sites located in Northern Canada; a Control Centre and Support Centre located in North Bay, ON and a Contract Management Office located in Ottawa, ON.We are looking for someone who cares about their work, is motivated, works collaboratively and thrives in a fast-paced environment. If you are someone who approaches work with passion and the courage to innovate, then this role is for you.*RESPONSIBILITIES: *The Facilities Maintenance Technician – Diesel Mechanic (FMT) has functional responsibility for monitoring, maintaining and troubleshooting the serviceability of the facilities, the power generation and electrical distribution systems (along with their related equipment) at the NWS Short Range Radar (SRR) and Long Range Radar (LRR) sites. The FMT is also responsible for ensuring that the associated administrative requirements are completed in accordance with standard operating procedures.*Provides diagnostic, problem solving and repair capabilities in the servicing of static and mobile electronics equipment

  • Reports and maintains facilities files as related to the NWS work management system, operational field reports, data analysis, etc.
  • Performs other duties assigned by a higher authority, which are unplanned or of a transient nature.
*DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE: *EDUCATION: A licensed journeyman and post journeyman experience as a Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanic or equivalent.CERTIFICATE(S) / LICENSE(S):
  • Provincial or territorial Journeyman qualification in heavy equipment or heavy-duty mechanic or Automotive Technician, or Military QL 5
  • 420A qualified or equivalent
  • Must possess the diesel endorsement
  • Qualified to maintain the specialty vehicles in Table 12-1 of the SOW
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
EXPERIENCE: Five years’ proven hands on field experience.KNOWLEDGE OF: Broad knowledge of electronics and mathematics, and how vehicle complex components work and interact.COMPETENCIES / SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Proven problem-solving skills
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work tasking.
  • Professional and friendly comportment due to many dealings with internal project stakeholders.
  • Skilled in the use of diagnostic equipment
  • Able to adapt to changing tasks and locations.
  • Ability to travel as part of a small team to adjacent sites to perform functions
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), as required
  • Ability to work under physically demanding, often adverse weather conditions in remote Arctic locations
INTERNAL TRAINING: Environment Awareness, Safety Awareness, WHMIS, QEMS, Security, and Oracle training in OTL.EFFORT: Physical effort includes physically lifting equipment and project material, working with tools, working and traveling to remote locations.WORKING CONDITIONS / TRAVEL: Work will be at various LRR and SRR radar sites in a remote setting. Frequent travel by fixed wing and rotary wing transportation will be necessary.RELATIONSHIPS: Internal: Interacts with members of NWSSC, LSSs and CMO, including: immediate Supervisor for information update and direction; Technical Specialist(s) to provide information and receive direction; and, Scheduler to provide/receive updates and work coordination.
