Formerly known as Frobisher Bay, Iqaluit is a developing modern city rich with traditional Inuit culture and home to over 7000 people, many artists, filmmakers and musicians among them. It is the political, business and transportation hub of Nunavut and the gateway to the Arctic from Eastern Canada. Iqaluit is surrounded by spectacular tundra featuring a range of landscapes: mountains, rivers and waterfalls. The community enjoys nearly 24 hours of sunshine in late June and early July with beautiful twilight skies for about two hours around midnight allowing ample opportunity for hiking, boating, canoeing and kayaking. The winter months offer glimpses of northern lights dogsledding, cross-country skiing or snowmobiling.About the Northern Region:The Northern Region has offices in each of the three territories – the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. There are currently 26 employees across the region – 14 lawyers, 2 paralegals, 3 legal assistants, 4 administrative staff, and 3 managerial level employees.The Iqaluit office is one of three offices forming part of the Northern Region. It is composed of two lawyers and one legal assistant currently embedded in office of another federal department which provides some administrative support and collegiality. Staff in the Iqaluit office have significant interaction with and support from colleagues in Yellowknife. The Iqaluit office provides general civil litigation to all federal departments operating in Nunavut and has an advisory practice that focuses primarily on assessment and regulation of natural resources initiatives, real property transactions and implementation and negotiation of modern treaties. Its main clientele is made up of Crown Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.The legal assistant in the Iqaluit office is an integral part of the legal team. Main functions include opening and closing files, drafting letters and preparing court filings, organizing legal records, etc. Given the varied general legal practice of the office, there is always something new going on. Given the limited staff, there is always something new to learn.
