Come and be a part of this success.About PotashBHP’s Jansen Potash Project located approximately 140 km east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is BHP’s first and most advanced potash project. Jansen will add diversity and a Canadian presence to BHP’s global portfolio. Jansen’s large resource endowment provides the opportunity to develop it in stages, with anticipated initial capacity of 4.35 Mtpa. The BHP Board has recently sanctioned Jansen Project (Stage 1), with a US $5.7 billion investment. The project is now entering the construction phase, with the first potash expected in 2027.The Jansen project has opted to adopt an integrated project team (IPT) delivery model to execute the mining scope. As the mining scope is on the critical path, an IPT model supports the sequential nature of mining tasks while ensuring seamless interfaces with the rest of the Jansen project. Through an IPT, shared accountability between BHP and HBJV is fostered, trusting that the best person is selected for each role as the team works towards safely delivering the mining scope on time, on budget, and with high quality. This team will strive for effective work planning, rapid and empowered decision-making, and continuous improvement through a joint construction and operational mindset. Through an IPT, BHP and HBJV leadership hope to expose the team to new perspectives, ways of working, and long-term career progression opportunities.PurposeThe Superintendent Mining - Health Safety Environment is the single point of accountability for developing and executing health and safety plans for the Mining IPT under the Jansen HSE (JHSE) management system. They will work closely with contractors to evaluate practices, procedures, and facilities to assess risk and adherence to the requirements and monitor compliance with safety regulations, JHSE management system and BHP organizational requirements. They will be responsible for overseeing and managing the Mining IPT team which includes conflict resolution, performance management, hazard ID & control methods, auditing and inspection cycles, incident investigation, leadership engagement, hazardous work permitting, emergency response preparedness and response capabilities, and career development aspirations. They will maintain site statistics and records (training, incidents, inspections, etc.) and evaluate progress by preparing detailed reports to the Mining IPT.The contract scope value for this section is $1.4Billion.About the RoleIn this role, you will:

  • Demonstrate and embed alignment with BHP’s Our Requirements of HSE, Charter Values and Code of Conduct.
  • Apply an understanding of the business context, BHP operating model and ways of working to enhance decision making, productivity and value chain performance
  • Support the leadership team in risk management related to strategic decisions in planning and execution. Analyse and provide expertise to leadership on how to improve the quality of safety risk assessments, controls and investigations, with a focus on sharing lessons learned from past events.
  • Manage the interface and reporting relationship with both Mining IPT and Site HSE Management
  • Provide specialist/functional expertise and coaching to implement the JHSE management system and drive a strong safety culture; including evaluating the effectiveness of Field Leadership, Investigation, Hazard reporting, Task Based Risk Management and identifying solution for leadership capability in these areas, including digital systems
  • Continue to ensure effective onboarding and evaluate the effective understanding of IPT and contractor leaders safety leadership understanding and application, and implement ways with the IPT leadership team to improve this capability
  • Deploy and manage Safety Advisors to implement health and safety initiatives
  • Manage Mining IPT auditing and inspection cycles and trending of HSE data

  • Assist in pre-qualification process and approval of Mining IPT contractors
  • Coordinate Emergency Management related activities and exercises and continually improve Crisis and Emergency Management Plans from any lessons learnt
  • Ensure they are adhering to and exhibiting Jansen core values
  • Operate day-to-day ensuring that activities are prioritized in line with broader objectives
  • Ensure that they are managing their time effectively and adhering to deadlines
  • Determine the underlying cause of problems and evaluate multiple solutions to ensure a planned and structured approach to solving complex problems
  • Gain support for and negotiate outcomes that achieve mutually beneficial goals
About You
  • CRSP or equivalent preferred with specific underground mining training and certification
  • Extensive experience in mining HSE
  • Solid working knowledge of HSE related underground/mining legislation
  • Strong understanding of legal health and safety guidelines, quality processes and systems
  • Ability in producing reports and developing relevant underground/mining policies
  • Good knowledge of data analysis and risk assessment
  • Working knowledge of engineering, contracts & procurement, construction, commissioning, project controls, health & safety, environment & community and risk multi-discipline workflows and interactions for large capital projects
  • High attention to detail, motivation, and commitment to quality outcomes
  • Ability to operate effectively and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment utilizing solution-based methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and quickly comprehend new concepts and technologies
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders including functional managers and discipline leads on the project, clients, outside vendors and contractors
  • Demonstrate strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills including root cause analysis training
  • Ability to effectively work with and lead the larger team to drive continuous improvement on the project
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite
  • Ability to foster an inclusive environment for their team while grounding to the Jansen core values
  • Ability to communicate effectively across various stakeholder groups
  • Ability to work and delegate effectively
  • Motivate themselves and peers to promote and engage in team building and relationship building activities
