Job Description

As the Discovery Farm Irrigation Intern, you will be responsible to assist Discovery Farm with current research projects, general farm hand duties, events and assist in building and maintaining our land and facilities. It is important to note that in this role you will be called upon to complete a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:  Core Responsibilities:  

  • Set up irrigation systems for clients and dismantle as needed 
  • Take irrigation water orders and book with supplier 
  • Check and maintain water systems (pumps, tanks, etc.) 
  • Create and update excel sheet with orders, customers, etc.  
  • Scout research fields and assess what the crop needs, provide report back to supervisor
  • Help with event preparation, set up and tear down  
  • Works at events  
  • Preparation and daily maintenance of all equipment and machinery for daily operations. 
  • Operation of farm and other machinery including skid steer, tele-handler, man-lifts, tractors, tillage equipment, grain bins, and augers. 
  • Chemical application to show site and crops. 
  • Workshop tidying and maintenance work. 
  • General servicing and maintenance of farm vehicles, small motors, and other equipment. 
  • Fencing and fence maintenance. 
  • Some stock work, trenching, yard work and mustering. 
  • Domestic duties as required (i.e., rubbish disposal, mowing farmyard). 
  • With the direction of our research scientist, cropping operations including cultivating and seeding. 
  • Conducting research activities including implementation of project protocols and data collection. Prior experience in agricultural research activities would be considered an asset. 
  • Crop Scouting Duties including crop staging and scouting for pest items. 
  • Experience towing trailers would be an asset.  
Qualifications:
  • This position may be required to work flexible hours during peak season.
  • Experience in agronomy would be an asset
  • Valid License
  • Valid CPR/First Aid Certificate an asset
  • Steel toed work boots are required
