Job Description

The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Provincial Police, and the North East Regional Commander are seeking a qualified individual to join our Detachment. In this exciting, rewarding and challenging opportunity, you will provide cleaning and maintenance services for grounds, interior and exterior of buildings and vehicles, and arranging for building and vehicle repairs. You will perform basic repairs and maintenance of operating systems, furniture and equipment.About Us:The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is one of North Americas largest deployed police services with more than 5,800 uniformed officers, 2,400 civilian employees and 830 Auxiliary officers. We provide essential services that ensure the safety and security of the people of the Province of Ontario. The OPP is a division of the Ministry of the Solicitor General, the largest operational ministry in the province with a presence in every community across Ontario. We are the largest police service in Ontario and the second largest in Canada.James Bay Detachments, with a total area of responsibility of approximately 250,000 square kilometers, is geographically the largest detachment within the OPP. The Detachment area is comprised of one administrative centre located in Kapuskasing and three satellite detachments located in Moosonee, Cochrane and Hearst; James Bay Detachment is the largest detachment within North East Region.The Detachment serves a total population of approximately 30,000. James Bay Detachments has a total approved compliment of 102 personnel, including 85 uniformed officers, 6 Special Constables and 11 civilian support staff and is comprised of front line operations, General Law Enforcement, Community Street Crime Unit, Criminal Investigations, Community Safety Officer, Court Case Management and Offender Transport Platoons / Units.The Detachment area also provides specialty and support services to multiple First Nations Territories policed by the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS), including: Fort Severn, Winisk/Peawanuck, Attawapiskat, Fort Albany, Kashechewan, Moose Factory, Marten Falls, English River, Constance Lake and Taykwa Tagamou.Located on the Moose River 12 miles south of James Bay, the town site is in the Hudson Bay Lowlands, the largest wetland area on earth. Moosonee serves as a gateway to the north and a launching point for further destinations; whether across the Moose River to Moose Factory, or further north up the western coast of James Bay to the neighboring First Nation communities. The population is approximately 3,500 with about 85% being Cree. The main language is English with Cree as a second language. There is also a small French language population.The Town of Moosonee has unique characteristics such as its “no road access” and slogan, “We Touch the Edge of the Arctic”. The town grew in importance with the arrival of the rail in 1932 when Moosonee became a transportation hub for the James Bay coastal communities. Travellers arrive in Moosonee by train or plane. Scheduled rail services are provided by Ontario Northland from Cochrane, Ontario. Scheduled air services are provided by Air Creebec, Thunder Airlines, and several smaller charter air companies based in Moosonee.The OPP Values promote always doing the right things for the right reasons, by:

What can I expect to do in this roleTo provide cleaning and maintenance services for grounds, interior and exterior of buildings and vehicles, and arranging for building and vehicle repairs.   • Ability to pass an OPP background/ security investigation.
  • Possess a valid G class drivers license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of vehicle maintenance guidelines in arranging vehicle maintenance and servicing. Knowledge of and skill in general cleaning techniques to ensure quality and efficiency. Knowledge of and skill in proper cleaning techniques for bodily substances (blood, vomit, urine, feces) located in cells and police vehicles. Knowledge of and skill in operating cleaning equipment (rug shampooer, floor polisher, power washer). Knowledge of maintenance of grounds keeping equipment and their operation (snow-blowers, lawnmowers, etc). Understanding of building operations and mechanical systems (heating, cooling, water, alarm systems, electrical) in order to identify and arrange servicing and repairs by technical personnel. Knowledge of and skill in basic carpentry and plumbing to perform minor repairs.Communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with officers in the allocation of vehicles while remaining aware of competing operational priorities and scheduled maintenance requirements. Unresolved issues are escalated to the manager as required. Interpersonal skills to schedule and coordinate work performed by external contractors; and to greet and provide/exchange information with the public and relay messages to staff while covering for receptionists in certain detachments.Ability to maintain the highest degree of integrity and professional discipline. Ability to maintain confidentiality.Performs basic vehicle maintenance checks to ensure vehicle is operational. Identifies requirements before sending out for servicing. Under normal circumstances, sending vehicles for maintenance and repair is straightforward, however, unexpected events such as accidents or break downs can take vehicles out of commission without notice and require determining alternate arrangements to ensure timely allocation of vehicles to officers.Determines repair needs and mechanical problems in building, its operating systems, furniture and equipment and ascertains whether or not an external contractor is required to resolve problem.Makes decisions in prioritizing schedule of activities to ensure that they are completed in a timely and efficient manner along with other daily responsibilities.Additional Information:Ensure that you read the job description to make sure you understand this job.
