Hours of Work :Monday to Friday; 8 hours per day; 7:00 am to 3:30 pm; which includes an unpaid 30 minute meal period.Summary :Under the direction of the Assistant Supervisor of Maintenance Services or designate, the Fire Alarm Technician is responsible for the implementation, installation, operation, maintenance, verification, and repair of all fire alarm equipment; ensuring work is performed in a safe and effective manner, complying with Board and legislative standards and codes; ensuring Board vehicles, equipment and tools are properly maintained; performing other related duties to ensure that properties, facilities, and equipment are properly maintained.Duties and Responsibilities :Installs, operates, maintains, verifies, and repairs fire alarm systems/equipment/devices. This includes Simplex, Cerberus, Edwards, Notifier, Mircom; smoke and heat detectors; door holders; shutdown fans and horns; sprinkler devices, tamper proof switches, etc.Ensures fire alarm equipment and systems are maintained.Ensures compliance with Board/Legislative standards and codes.Ensures Board vehicle and tools are properly maintained.Ensures work performed in Board buildings is completed in a safe and effective manner.Performs other related activities such as assisting other trades and site staff on electrical matters and undertaking other tasks, not necessarily related to this trade, as required, in order to ensure prompt situational responses and cross trade cooperation.Skills and Knowledge :Knowledge of and continual upgrading to relevant codes and legislation (Acts and Regulations), new materials, equipment, products, methods and procedures. Interpersonal and communication skills required to liaise with co-workers, plant supervisors, inspectors and other Board personnel to determine problems, order and purchase supplies/materials; listening skills required to understand explanations of problems and how equipment is functioning, etc.; Organization skills to prioritize work orders and reschedule activities due to emergency calls; Initiative and judgement are required to make decisions such as methods of repair and equipment/supplies needed, and prioritizing work orders; ability to use a variety of tools, e.g., drill, voltage meter, hydraulic personnel lifting devices; ability to report code violations, complete forms such as daily logs and work order sheets; ability to calculate formulae for circuit loading and material costing. Ability to use electronic mail system and computer maintenance management system. Ability to work with minimum supervision.Education and Experience :This knowledge would normally be obtained through completion of secondary school diploma and completion of the Fire Alarm Technician Program from a recognized institution. Registration and certification as a Fire Alarm Technician with CFAA, or equivalent is required. The incumbent will have five (5) years experience in the fire alarm trade/industry. A combination of education and experience may also be considered.
