Job Description

Status:OpenThe Assistant Maintenance Superintendent, Mechanical, supports the Superintendents by actively leading, reviewing and updating all maintenance components of the Clients terminal through planned and corrective maintenance, significant repairs, equipment breakdowns, and various Projects or Changes. The Assistant Superintendent acts in integrity to ensure all safety, environmental and maintenance standards are adhered to and maintenance goals are met, in order to continuously improve the terminal’s performance. The Assistant Superintendent demonstrates excellence in ensuring the completion of all maintenance activities and projects/changes, in coordination with Safety, Environmental, Projects, Engineering, Operations and Maintenance teams. And is interfacing with the Superintendents, the Head Foreman and the Foremen to execute the daily activities related to Preventive, Predictive and Corrective Maintenance as per the daily schedule and priorities set up by the Maintenance and Operational team.The Assistant Maintenance Superintendent- Mechanical, will be trained, coached and mentored by the Superintendents and will perform the Superintendents duties when required as part of his/her development and growth.Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

  • Promote and lead Safety Excellence, comply with all safety standards, be adept at creating, implementing and monitoring safety initiatives, perform safety and performance audits as well as field level risk assessments and tool box talks.
  • Demonstrate excellence in Mechanical Discipline by managing and maintaining the required availability and utilization factors of the Coal and Potash Systems as per Production schedule.
  • Prioritize, assign, review and report on the performance of maintenance foremen and employees, maintenance systems, contractors and operations on site, reporting learnings, gaps and improvements to the Superintendents.
  • Feedback of findings, learnings and recommendations to the Reliability, Planning and Schedulers team, in order to update the future plans/schedule/JDE.
  • Manage investigations, corrective actions, root cause analysis and follow-up, being also an alternate member of the JOHSC Committee.
  • Assist in the design, development, and implementation of major capital projects and significant repairs and assist in the preparation of annual maintenance and capital budgets
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of the Collective Bargaining Agreements, ensures maintenance personnel work in accordance to the CBA’s
  • Supports and solves disputes and conflicts in our unionized environment.
  • Execution and continuous improvement of planned maintenance, using JDE and audits, to sustain operations.
  • Develop, Maintain and Account for department metrics and KPI’s.
  • Promote and maintain a culture of cooperation and excellence between maintenance, operations, safety, engineering, projects and purchasing employees.
  • Participate in Vendor selection, monitoring of performance to ensure that Costs, Quality and timeline meet maintenance requirements.
  • The Assistant Maintenance Superintendent will be assigned other duties as required.
Duties:
  • Establishes, communicates, commits, and follows to completion all maintenance priorities, plans and schedule. Deviations from the plan and from the priorities should be tracked and residual risks assigned when moving activities.
  • Assists the Superintendents in the preparation of the annual maintenance budget.
  • Support Lifecycle decisions (repair versus new), monitor the cost of repairs and maintenance in relation to budget.
  • Ensures the required human and physical resources to meet all maintenance-related functions.
  • Evaluates employee performance, conducts discipline as necessary and communicates with Union business agents as required.
  • Assists engineering and operations in the development, and implementation of major capital projects and significant repairs.
  • Maintains effective working relationship with appropriate union and external resources required.
  • Communicate effectively within the Maintenance team and provides input to Reliability and the Planners to adjust the Preventive, Predictive and Corrective Maintenance based on field results.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, grow and develop an effective team.
  • Strong planning and organization skills, coupled with ability to manage multiple conflicting priorities.
  • Superior communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong technical skills with mechanical systems, coupled with a thorough understanding of preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance.
  • Sees opportunities others do not and can adjust priorities and resources as required.
  • Strong leadership skills in a unionized environment, coupled with the ability to promote a team culture.
  • Self-starter, takes the time to observe functions in the field, and acts to correct or improve the work environment.
  • Ability to complete risk assessments of new technology, and determine feasibility and benefit of implementation.
  • Demonstrated accident and incident investigation skills using the ability to conduct root cause analysis, to improve terminal operations.
  • Flexibility to meet the requirements of a 24/7 operation.
  • Proficient with CMMS systems, MS Office Suite.
Tasks:
  • Taking the daily Preventive, Predictive and Corrective maintenance activities, assigning sequence, resourcing and materials, making it executable.
  • Report findings before, during and after the maintenance execution to the Planner and Reliability team, in order to update the Task List.
  • Interfacing effectively with Maintenance Head Foremen, Foremen and Operations Superintendents, Operation Head Foremen, Foremen, adjusting the daily priorities to the production requirements.
  • Actively participating on the daily Safety, Production Meetings providing input into the daily schedule and next 24 hrs timeframe or weekends.
  • Available for shifts during weekends and night shifts for abnormal situations
Education:
  • Preference: Mechanical Engineering Degree
  • University or Technical School graduate, Interprovincial Red Seal trade would also be considered
Experience:
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ supervision experience in a unionized environment, supervising several trade disciplines
  • Minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in material bulk loading/unloading in a waterfront, mining, heavy industry or similar operation
