Our campuses are located on the territories of the LíỈwat, xʷməθkʷəỷəm (Musqueam), shíshálh (Sechelt), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and SəỈílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.The Indigenous Initiatives Faculty Advisor will be an ambassador for Capilano University as it continues its work on Indigenization. The Indigenous Initiatives Faculty Advisor will work directly with faculty in indigenizing curriculum, programming, and the learning environment. The Indigenous Initiatives Faculty Advisor will report to the Associate VP, Academic & Vice-Provost, who supports educational leadership within the university, both directly and through its many institutional arms, including the Centre for Teaching Excellence (CTE), whose major focus is to assist faculty to enhance pedagogical practices that are learning-centred and collaborative.Under the general guidance of Associate VP Academic & Vice-Provost, the IndigenousInitiatives Faculty Advisor is responsible to do the following:

  • Plan, implement and evaluate a Land School/ Water School education framework for faculty across the university, with an emphasis on Indigenization, effective teaching, student learning, experiential learning, and other priority areas as they are evolved by faculty and supported by the university
  • Consult and advise faculty in Land/Water School curriculum development according to evidence-informed best practices for student learning such as high impact educational practices
  • Advise faculty in effective and innovative Land/Water School teaching practices through formal and informal individual and group consultations, resource creation, and workshop and institute delivery
  • Support faculty in course development, delivery and assessment of meaningful learning experiences within the Land/Water School
  • Disseminate and promote knowledge on Land/Water School teaching and learning
  • Work with faculty on specific course-related needs (e.g., designing and usingrubrics, active learning strategies, and assessment) in the context of aLand/Water School
Required Qualifications & ExperienceCapU is committed to diversifying and supporting its teaching faculty. A specialization in Indigenous Land School and Water School learning is preferred, but scholars in all fields of land-based education will be considered.
  • A Master’s degree from an accredited institution in a related field, including land-based education and Indigenous studies, should be in process at the time of application. We also invite applicants with an equivalent combination of education, scholarship, lived experience and community engagement;
  • Understanding of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report and the UNDRIP and ability to incorporate related issues into activities and university initiatives;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Experience facilitating in a sensitive and cross-cultural learning environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to move forward and facilitate a project or initiative;
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous administrative structures and processes.
