The roles may be held by one individual.Location North VancouverNature and Scope of WorkThe Learning Specialist provides learning strategies and academic support to the Capilano University student community. The role of the Learning Specialist is to support student retention and to facilitate and enhance student academic performance, particularly those with complex needs by assessing their barriers to learning, determining an individualized success plan, and providing them with individualized learning skills instruction. The Learning Specialist frequently works in collaboration with other student support services and faculty.Responsibilities and Duties:Provide scheduled individual appointments with students, including those with complex learning needs, such as students with disabilities, students on academic probation or required to withdraw, and students with multiple barriers to learning.Assess students’ barriers to learning and collaboratively develop an individualized success plan.Provide individual instruction in time management, note taking, exam-preparation, textbook reading, and other study skills concerns.Develop, design, and instruct learning strategies and skills workshops in settings from a large group of students in an auditorium to a few students in a small classroom or online.Support faculty and their students by teaching in-class, course specific, learning skills workshops.Liaise and collaborate with department programs to develop projects that address learning needs specific to the students in the programs.Develop and revise learning skills handouts for students, as well as design and create online student resources for the University website.Attend regularly scheduled department and faculty meetings.Participate in university committees and events (e.g. student orientation) as required.Other duties and responsibilities related to this position and as stated in the Capilano Faculty Association Collective Agreement.Required Qualifications & ExperienceA master’s degree in education, or in a related field.Minimum of three years’ experience providing individual and group instruction in a post-secondary setting.Demonstrated excellence in teaching individualized learning skills and strategies to adult learners.Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in providing learning specialist services and supports to a diverse student population.Knowledge of learning differences, pre-screening tools and techniques.Demonstrated experience in developing and offering course aligned workshops in learning strategies and skills at faculty or department request.Knowledge of current learning theory, student development theory, and application at post-secondary level.Strong communication skills, verbal and written.Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.Ability to develop, recommend and implement new strategies, policies, and procedures.Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.Internal or External Position ExternalAppointment Date (mm/dd/yyyy) 09/01/2021Salary Scale Faculty ScalePost Date 08/06/2021Close Date 08/22/2021Open Until Filled NoQuick Apply
