JOB VACANCYVISUAL LANGUAGE INTERPRETERPosting Number C-2223-102 (Please refer to this number when applying)Position: Visual Language InterpreterRate: $31.86 per hour (current rate)Shift: DayHours of: 32.5 Hours per week, School TermLocation: Eastview ElementaryEffective: September 6, 2022Deadline: Thursday, September 1 2022 @ 8:30 AMNATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK:This is specialized work of a student assistance and teacher support nature attending to the interpretative and educational needs of deaf and hard of hearing student(s) and their hearing peers, classroom teachers, parents, school staff and administration in the classroom, as well as school activities such as assemblies, field trips, teams, clubs and other educational experiences. An employee of this class provides assistance by performing a variety of tasks with an individual or groups of students. Employees will be required to bring specialized skills to assist students who are deaf/hard of hearing. The work requires considerable initiative, emotional stability, empathy and understanding of the many and varied issues these students face. This position requires sound judgement in dealing with a variety of situations under the general supervision of a teacher(s). Work performance is reviewed and evaluated by an administrator in terms of effective services rendered to students and staff.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:Required Knowledge, Abilities and SkillsAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships and work collaboratively as a member of the educational team.Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.Ability to establish trust and rapport with students and staff.Knowledge of the basic aspects of childrens educational, physical, social and emotional development.Understanding of language implications on the education of deaf and hard of hearing students and competency in adapting to various signing styles along the communication continuum.Knowledge of the basic principles of educational practices, the function of support services, and the role of interpreters as part of an educational team.Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices related to the learning style and other needs of students with hearing loss.Fluency in American Sign Language and the methods and practices of deaf or hard of hearing students’ learning styles.Understanding of impacts of hearing loss on academic and social emotional learning.Working knowledge of adaptive technology related to work performed including smartphones, computers and related software.Considerable knowledge of the academic course content and nonacademic programs as required for assigned students.Considerable knowledge of a wide range of equipment including adaptive technology. Examples may include, but are not limited to: computers, iPads, closed captioning, computer software and Smart Boards.Working knowledge of child development.Working knowledge of basic first aid.Ability to implement student Individual Educational Plan (IEP), Individual Care Plan, academic and other individual programs.Ability to educate students regarding the interpreting role by encouraging responsibility and independenceAbility to establish and maintain effective relationships with students with special needs.Ability to perform a variety of record keeping tasks, including the collection and monitoring of data.DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:Completion of the 12th grade or equivalent, plus basic first aid.Completion of ASL DiplomaActive membership in the Association of Visual Interpreters of Canada (AVLIC) & Westcoast Association of Visual Language InterpretersFive years prior interpreting experience working with children or young adults with in an educational, or community setting, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND REGISTRATIONS:Maintain an Active membership with the provincial and the national interpreting organizations and abide by the AVLIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional ConductAPPLICATION PROCEDURE:Application forms for CUPE positions are available on line through the District Portal on the Job Postings >Non-teaching Jobs web page or at the board office.
