Job Description

Duration8-month contract (October 2022- May 2023); 35 hours a weekStartOctober 2022 (flexible)Application Deadlineongoing or until positions are filledLocationNunavik, QCDescriptionLooking for impactful and rewarding work with youth in Indigenous communitiesBecome a tutor in one of the 14 Inuit communities of Northern Quebec!In partnership with Kativik Ilisarniliriniq (Nunavik school board), we are seeking open, dedicated, and adaptable individuals to provide math and literacy support to high school students in Nunavik.Tutors create their own schedule and adapt their approach and programming to each school and class, meeting the needs of the students through a combination of in-class and after-school tutoring. Tutors also organize and take part in extra-curricular activities alongside students to contribute to an inclusive school environment.Supported by, and working in collaboration with the local school personnel, tutors will work under the remote supervision of the Frontier College Program Manager.For more information about working and living in Nunavik, please consult this tutor guide: Compensation: Annual salary of $42,000 in addition to an annual northern allowanceHousing will be provided as well as all roundtrip travel costs and arrangements (from your location) at the start and end of contract.In addition to your salary, youll benefit from:

Your main responsibilities and major duties:
  • Collaborate with school personnel to identify students who need support
  • Establish trust and build relationships with students and community members
  • Work closely with math teachers to offer individualized support in the classroom
  • Provide drop-in or targeted math and literacy tutoring sessions outside of class hours
  • Ensure a safe, positive, and respectful environment when tutoring
  • Develop and adapt material to students’ needs and levels
  • Track and evaluate students’ progress and program impact
  • Submit weekly reports to Program Manager and maintain accurate records as required
  • Manage a budget
  • Ensure adherence to all program directives and guidelines and perform other duties as assigned by Frontier College
Skills, Attributes and Requirements
  • Minimum 18 years old
  • Demonstrated experience in working with teens or children
  • Comfortable with high school-level math curriculum (there will be opportunities to review in training)
  • Excellent listening and communication skills
  • Good organizational and time-management skills
  • Works well under pressure and can adapt to changing and unpredictable environments
  • Sensitivity or awareness of cultural differences and the broader societal realities of Inuit communities
Additional Assets
  • Bilingualism (Knowledge of French or Inuktitut)
  • Prior experience working with Inuit, First Nation or Métis individuals or communities
  • Prior experience living and working in isolated and/or cross-cultural community settings
