Government Relations OfficerTracking Code: req414Faculty/Department: Office of PresidentNumber of Positions: 1Appointment Type: Full-Time ContinuingHours of Work: 35 hours per weekSalary Range: Level 10 - Starting Salary, Step 1 $81,033Posting Date: November 15, 2022Closing Date: December 27, 2022Job Summary:The Government Relations Officer develops and fosters proactive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders of the university, in order to promote and leverage institutional strengths. This position, alongside the government relations team, is responsible for representing the interests and objectives of the university before all four levels of government.The Government Relations Officer will have the opportunity to work closely with Municipal Councils in Durham Region and Northumberland County, as well as Provincial Ministries in order to grow partnerships and advance the priorities of the University. There will also be the opportunity to support federal advocacy and project specific work.This position plays an important role in supporting the university’s strategic priorities with government stakeholders, especially:

  • This role reports into the Manager of Government & Community Relations.
  • This role will work in a primarily open environment while in office, and travel around Durham Region and the province is required on a somewhat regular basis.
  • This role has the option for partial hybrid work, but significant time on Campus is expected.
Responsibilities/accountabilities:External Government Stakeholder Liaison/Advocacy & Lobbying:
  • Works with stakeholders within all levels of government;
  • Communicates Ontario Tech’s key messages to senior government leaders to enhance institutional linkages, advance priorities, and reputation.
  • Organizing and execute Campus tours for and visits by government stakeholders
  • Presenting university issues and items at forums held by government stakeholders (i.e. municipal council meetings, pre-Budget consultations, legislative committees, etc)
Government & Media Monitoring:
  • Collects, analyzes and disseminates information directly to members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT);
  • Monitors all releases of government media that may impact Ontario Tech and the university sector in general;
  • Watches local council sessions, relevant legislative or Parliamentary committees and review minutes as necessary.
External Stakeholder Liaison:
  • Works closely with external community stakeholders;
  • Meets and communicates key Ontario Tech messages to senior community leaders to enhance institutional linkages, advance priorities and reputation.
  • Acts as a brand ambassador to all external parties.
Internal Stakeholder Liaison:
  • Acts as subject matter expert across the university to understand needs and opportunities to leverage initiatives and develop new government partnerships;
  • Provides expert analysis and/or advice in relation to government policies, priorities, protocol and emerging issues regarding their impact on the university.
Projects:
  • Provides government and community relations expertise to internal colleagues and joins project teams to assist with execution;
  • Works directly with SLT on various projects they prioritize and intend to bring before government.
Required Skills:
  • Strong presentation skills with comfort presenting before municipal councils and federal/provincial public consultations
  • Strong writing skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to influence outcomes and build consensus
  • Professional communications skills are essential to success in this role
  • Event Coordination Skills with preference given to those with experience working Tour, or travelling to staff, a provincial or federal Minister.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with those not previously encountered by leveraging one’s broadly built network
Required Education:
  • Completion of a university program consisting of four academic years or equivalent.
  • An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.
  • Verification of Academic credentials may be required
Required Experience:
  • Over 5 years and including 7 years working in government or in a government relations role for an organization or consulting firm.
  • Strong consideration given to those with an understanding of the machinations of government (Cabinet Process, Budget process, etc).
