Job Description

SUMMARY: The Huntsman Marine Science Centre (www.huntsmanmarine.ca) is an independent federally registered not-for-profit education and research institution located along the shore of the Bay of Fundy in St. Andrews, NB. Our mission is to inspire aquatic stewardship through education programming and advance marine science through collaborative research projects.We are seeking to fill a Field Education Specialist position who will report to the Manager of Education & Outreach and work with a dynamic team of public outreach and education professionals. The successful individual will serve as the Huntsman primary point of contact to deliver education programs to visiting high school and university students as well as tourism focused field trips. These efforts will build on our highly successful programs that have engaged and inspired more than 75,000 students of all ages since our inception in 1969.SALARY AND BENEFITS: The position is a 100% education & outreach appointment with salary commensurate with experience plus benefits, including health care with life insurance and annual and sick leave available following completion of a standard employment probationary period.RESPONSIBILITIES:High School Experiential Field Programs: 30%

  • Design and deliver field course programs that meet the stated objectives of visiting high school classes and inspire students for greater ocean awareness and stewardship.
  • Coordinate scheduling of Huntsman assets to accommodate visiting high school classes and avoid use conflicts with other users of shared facilities and Fundy Spray vessel time.
  • Lead Huntsman team member point of interaction for visiting high school classes during their stay on campus to ensure a safe and meaningful learning experience that inspires return visits in subsequent years.
Huntsman Marine Academy™: 30%
  • Lead Huntsman team member point of interaction for Ocean S.T.E.A.M.™ programming, including delivery of curriculum for some courses when applicable, to ensure course delivery across a broad range of themes is implemented successfully.
  • Coordinate scheduling of Huntsman assets to accommodate visiting high school classes and avoid use conflicts with other users of shared facilities and Fundy Spray vessel time.
  • Participate within a Huntsman Education & Outreach team responsible to develop a robust course catalog, largely engaging external instructors, which inspire high school students for careers in the ocean economy.
Public Education: 20%
  • Work collaboratively with Education & Outreach colleagues to design and deliver tourism focused field experiences that engages a broad range of ages and interests in marine biology and related topics.
University Field Courses: 10%
  • Coordinate scheduling of Huntsman assets to accommodate visiting high school classes and avoid use conflicts with other users of shared facilities and Fundy Spray vessel time.
  • Lead Huntsman team member point of interaction for visiting university faculty and teaching assistants to ensure course delivery across a broad range of themes is implemented successfully.
Other Support: 10%
  • Responsible to maintain education assigned laboratory equipment and supplies with inventory control, especially for appropriate seasonal long-term storage to ensure longevity of items for use year over year.
  • Advocate for high school and university programming needs during the annual budget development process.
  • Organize assigned staff and delegate tasks for efficient implementation of field education activities.
  • Support other Education & Outreach department activities when required, including Fundy Discovery Aquarium interpretation, special events, outreach activities, etc.
  • Attend appropriate education focused conferences to increase awareness and expand Huntsman education clientele
  • Prepare proposals to acquire funding that increases the Huntsman capacity to deliver its field education programs.
  • Present high school and university program activities to activity funders and Huntsman donors as required to further develop opportunities.
  • Assist in further Huntsman business development opportunities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Degree or diploma in biology, geography, conservation or related discipline.
  • Transport Canada MED Domestic Vessel Safety (DVS) certificate (note this certificate replaces the previous MED A1 and MED A2 courses)
  • Self-motivated individual with a strong desire to share knowledge and passion for all aspects of marine biology and responsible uses of our aquatic resources within the Bay of Fundy working waterfront.
  • Demonstrated ability to cooperate with colleagues having a diverse background and interact well within public settings.
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills in English in a manner that is informative for dissemination in an engaging manner.
  • Physical ability to perform assigned duties that may require work in adverse environmental conditions and/or carry or lift heavy materials.
  • Ability to legally work or obtain a Visa to work in Canada.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bilingual oral and written communication, preferably French.
  • Teaching degree, diploma or certificate.
  • Familiarization with the Bay of Fundy region.
  • Demonstrated teaching/instructional experience (2-3 years) within a formal or informal (e.g., public or community based) setting, preferably with a focus on aquatic ecosystems.
