Job Description

The YMCA of Greater Saint John and the Department of Post-Secondary Education Training and Labour have partnered to help develop the talent pipeline and support the leaders of tomorrow in Southeastern New Brunswick through a youth employability program – Y IGNITE.What is Y IGNITEY IGNITE is a curriculum-based employment program that will provide youth with the opportunity to learn transferrable skills, gain valuable work experience and build their professional network.The Y IGNITE program is made up of 3 different parts:

  • Job Placement: Each program participant will spend four days each week in a job placement in a department of the YMCA.
  • Employment Workshops: Program participants will spend one day a week in paid employment workshops facilitated by the Youth Employment Coordinator and guest speakers from the community. Workshops will focus on financial literacy, resume and cover letter development, building confidence in public speaking and a variety of YMCA staff training.
  • Mentorship: Each program participant will be matched with a young professional in the Saint John Area who will be their mentor throughout the program. Through biweekly meetings, mentors will provide program participants with guidance, career advice and community connections.
The next Y IGNITE cohort begins on January 9th and ends on March 31st. This cohort will be for youth between the ages of 18 – 30 who are not currently attending full-time education. Participants must be available to work full-time hours throughout the program.The OpportunityAs part of the Y Ignite program, we are looking for five youth to join one of the following departments as part of their job placement:
  • Child Care and After School Provider: The YMCA offers Child Care and After School programs at many locations throughout Saint John. You will play an essential role in childrens learning and growth, including physical and social development, in a safe and child-centred environment.
  • Facilities Maintenance & Cleaner: The YMCA houses our programs in several facilities in Saint John. You will be responsible for performing upkeep tasks and ensuring facilities are tidy, well-maintained and functional.
  • Irving Oil Field House Assistant: Our team at the Field House is looking for assistance with their front desk, managing rentals of the facility and administrative duties.
  • Marketing Assistant: The Marketing team at the Y is looking for a Marketing Assistant to develop a digital marketing plan. This position is perfect for youth interested in gaining experience in social media and design.
  • Lifeguard: We’re actively recruiting lifeguards to join our Aquatics department. Preference is given to applicants that have their Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross certification through the YMCA will provide the National Lifeguard Certification.
  • Administrative Assistant: Different members of our Administration team are looking for an assistant to help with tasks in Fund Development, Volunteer Management and scheduling in our Aquatics and Recreation departments.

  • Candidates are required to provide full proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or a valid medical certificate exempting them from the vaccine.
  • Employment is contingent on having a clean Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search along with clearance from the Department of Social Development.
