Job Description

The LSS serves the public interest and advances the administration of justice by regulating the competence and integrity of the practice of law in a flexible and innovative manner, ensuring independence of the legal profession, and promoting access to justice.The Position: Practice Auditor, Trust SafetyThe LSS Trust Safety team has the responsibility to ensure the safe and proper handling of client monies deposited into the trust accounts of all law firms in the province. As such, the LSS is seeking a permanent full-time Practice Auditor to complete compliance audits to provide effective oversight and regulation of lawyer’s trust accounts. This work will be carried out in law firms of different sizes and practice areas across the province.The Law Society and the public it serves benefits from diverse sets of skills, experiences, and perspectives. How you will spend your time:

  • Conduct visits to new and established law firms throughout Saskatchewan to perform compliance audits to ensure lawyers are complying with the requirements of The Legal Profession Act, 1990 (Act) and the LSS Rules (Rules) and to identify potential and actual Rule violations and risks related to trust account handling.
  • Working with the Director of Trust Safety to provide feedback to lawyers regarding their level of compliance with the rules and what steps should be taken to remedy any deficiencies.
  • Assist in developing and improving compliance audit procedures.
  • Review the suitability of internal control design at law firms.
  • Provide assistance to law firms to develop sound accounting practices and procedures that comply with the Act and Rules.
What you bring to the table:
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
  • At least 3 years of auditing or related experience.
  • Advanced training in fraud related courses (CFE or CIA) is considered an asset.
  • Understanding the Rules and prior completion of accountant’s reports (TA-5 or TA-5R) considered an asset.
  • Solid understanding of the Law Society’s mandate, legislation, and policies.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to critically think and manage large quantities of data.
  • Intermediate or advanced training in Microsoft Office with an emphasis on Word and Excel skills.
  • Confident and professional demeanor when dealing with lawyers.
  • Ability to work independently in an environment where a high level of attention to detail, accuracy and confidentiality are paramount.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.
  • Travel will be required so must have a valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
