Job Description

Location: SaskatchewanPosition details: Full Time. 12 month contract with possibility for extension.Taking care of our environment has never been more important than it is today. The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is looking for an enthusiastic Stewardship Coordinator to join a team committed to protecting our most important natural areas and the plants and animals they sustain.NCC is the nation’s leading not-for-profit, private land conservation organization, working to protect our most important natural areas and the species they sustain. Since 1962 NCC and its supporters have protected 15 million hectares (more than 35 million acres) of ecologically significant land across Canada. With a national office in Toronto and seven regional offices across the country, NCC delivers results you can walk on.Position SummaryUnder the direction of the Program Director, the Stewardship Coordinator leads the coordination and delivery of all stewardship activities as outlined in NCC’s Property Management Plans and Natural Area Conservation Plans in an assigned geographic area. Stewardship activities include but are not limited to: inventory, management planning, ecosystem restoration and maintenance, management of leases, partnership and stakeholder liaison, coordination and review of research, property inspection and compliance monitoring, and supervision of contractors and seasonal staff.Responsibilities:

  • Land Stewardship
  • Work closely with the Program Director in the identification and implementation of land stewardship activities that enhance identified biodiversity targets
  • Work closely with the Program Director to develop and implement Property Management Plans (PMPs) for NCC-owned properties
  • Coordinate with other regional staff to undertake monitoring programs of owned lands or lands under conservation easements
  • Develop baseline documentation reports and inventories for new NCC projects with support from Conservation Science staff
  • Administer grazing and property leases, including development of lease agreements and collection of grazing records
  • Provide training for and supervision of seasonal staff, and lead coordination/scheduling of stewardship activities in assigned geographic region
  • Conservation Planning / Science
  • Provide input into the development and revision of Natural Area Conservation Plans (NACPs)
  • Work with Conservation Science staff to implement science related actions as determined by NACPs and PMPs
  • Provide input into annual NACP progress reports
  • Recommend the development and use of new conservation tools that assist in the facilitation of NACP actions.
  • Partnerships
  • Establish and maintain positive and productive relationships with landowners
  • Maintain positive relations with local communities, governments, municipalities, Indigenous communities and other partners on the landscape
  • Work with Regional staff to plan and implement Conservation Volunteer, donor and other engagement events in the region
  • Represent NCC on various committees and at meetings or workshops as needed.
  • Budgeting and Workplanning
  • Support the Program Director in the development of annual budgets and in the monitoring and tracking of expenditures related to stewardship activities
  • Support the Program Director in annual stewardship work planning, activity tracking and progress reporting
  • Administrative and Other Responsibilities
  • Responsible for project administration activities related to project documentation and processes, including data input
  • Under the direction of the Program Director, undertake conservation activities consistent with nationally and regionally approved policies and processes, as well as relevant Provincial and/or Federal laws and regulations
  • Provide necessary administrative support, recommendations and monitoring of regional assets within respective natural areas
  • Provide input on funding proposals related to geographic area of responsibility
Position Requirements
  • Successful completion of a four-year undergraduate University program in a related discipline
  • Knowledge of Saskatchewan’s flora and fauna, and experience with associated land management techniques
  • An understanding of conservation easement and other legal tools associated with private land conservation
  • Ability to communicate positively and effectively with land owners, easement holders, donors, Indigenous communities and stakeholders
  • Excellent writing skills for reporting, proposals, business correspondence, and conservation documents such as property stewardship management plans and baseline inventories
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously, and the ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet deadlines
  • Experience with GPS systems and technology associated with field-based mapping, as well as MSOffice, MSWord, MSExcel, MSPowerPoint etc.
  • Willingness to travel and work in remote environments, along with occasional evenings and weekends
