Department: Service Nova Scotia and Internal ServicesLocation: SHUBENACADIEType of Employment: TermUnion Status: NSGEU - NSPGClosing Date: 8/5/2022 (Applications are accepted until 11:59 PM Atlantic Time)Hiring Pool InformationThis competition could be used to fill part-time and full-time position with the potential statuses of permanent, term, temporary, casual for the position of Dispatch Operators.About UsThe Shubenacadie Radio Communications Centre provides public safety and public works dispatch and call notification services to hundreds of organizations at all levels of Government in Nova Scotia. Shubenacadie Radio Communications Centre provides 7-24-365 dispatch, call notification, critical activity monitoring, emergency notifications, answering services, secure alarming and remote infrastructure management (telecommunications tower sites) to support many first response services such as EMO, volunteer Fire Services, Conservation Enforcement and others.About Our OpportunityAs the Dispatch Operator, you are responsible for the provision of dispatch, call notification, call answering, database queries and activity monitoring and alarming services for a variety of federal, provincial, and municipal government departments and agencies. You must frequently access multiple communications and information technology tools and databases (such as criminal and summary offense databases and Registry of Motor Vehicle databases) to support these activities through administrative and record keeping, and monitoring functions including: coordinating and recording service technician activity at the dispatch center (and more then 50 telecom sites); critical activity monitoring and alarming for policing and security functions; and, after hours notification of emergency services personnel.About YouTo be successful in this role, you will have completed High School and have five years of related experience or an acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience. First and foremost, the successful candidate will take pride in high quality service delivery. The candidate must have high attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and superior oral and written communication skills, and must detail in their submission their client service experience (i.e., in a public customer service environment, or providing support to internal clients).The ideal candidate will also have the following skills and work experience:

  • The operator is required to be trained and to understand, in an emergency and/or disaster setting, the use of multiple specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for individual agencies. For example, the SOPs covering the transport of prisoners to and from court and correctional institutions by the Nova Scotia Justice Sheriff Service.
  • You must have knowledge of computer software programs, such as the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, as well as internet-based programs.
  • You must be a strong team player, resourceful, reliable, able to use good judgment, take initiative, have excellent communication skills, a high degree of organizational skills, be able to maintain several tasks simultaneously, able to stay calm during time of crisis and determine priorities with minimal supervision, while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Typing skills are an asset.
Additional Information
  • Location is in Shubenacadie only.
  • Candidates agree to provide a hearing test and submit to on-line testing before being asked to attend an interview.
  • Operators are required to work shift work with minimal supervision. If successful, you must be available to work varying 12-hour shifts during daytime, evening, and overnight shifts, including weekends and holidays. Scheduling and time off is granted based on length of service.
  • The facility is a 24-hour operation and is a tobacco free environment.
  • Successful candidates will complete a minimum of 6 weeks to a maximum 8 weeks on-site training program during which time continuous evaluation will determine continuation in the position.
