The 40 hectare park has enchanted Nova Scotian’s and visitors alike and provides a wide range of outdoor recreational and educational opportunities.About Our OpportunityAs the Head Animal Caretaker, you will be responsible for the direct care and maintenance of captive wildlife in this facility. Duties include the preparation of complex diets, daily health checks, parasite management, and database updates for captive wildlife.Primary AccountabilitiesSome of the primary accountabilities of the role include:

  • Participating in ongoing training and information sessions to stay current with animal welfare, husbandry and other wildlife heath issues, disease outbreaks and prevention.
  • Providing coordinated reporting and communication on animal care issues between the Manager, Foreperson and Attendants to ensure that animal care requirements are delivered promptly and effectively.
  • Providing daily feeding, watering of animals and cleaning of enclosures/cages in rotation with Wildlife Park Attendants. Administering medications as directed by the Manager and accurately recording and reviewing medical information to identify trends and making recommendations to address any identified concerns.
  • Accurately recording information related to animal health, medical condition, and diet using spreadsheets, databases, internet, and email. Must be able to communicate with other professionals in wildlife and zoo fields, perform research related to issues in wildlife in Nova Scotia or at the Park.
  • Providing direction to permanent and seasonal staff and volunteers on animal diets, husbandry practices.
As the Head Animal Caretaker you will report to the Foreperson.Qualifications and ExperienceDo you have a passion for working with animals As the Head Animal Caretaker, you will play a key role in maintaining the wellbeing of the captive wildlife in our facility. This may be the right opportunity for you if you have high school plus 3 years experience in related field (including, but not limited to, animal health or animal nutrition), with post-secondary education in animal science an asset.As the successful candidate, you have experience studying and working with wildlife. You are knowledgeable of nutrition or wildlife diets, behaviours, and zoonotic diseases. You work well both independently and as a team-player.
