Job Description

Safety and Emergency Response Training Centre (SERT)Marine Institute(Contractual On Call Position to March 31, 2024)The Marine Institutes Safety and Emergency Response Training Centre (SERT) provides training in safety, survival, and emergency response to Maritime, Offshore Oil & Gas, land based industrial industries, and firefighting and emergency response organizations. The training includes both theoretical lecture and practical exercises in realistic simulated emergency situations primarily within two operational units, Firefighting and Marine/In-Water Operations. SERT is looking to hire an individual in the position of Research and Technical Personnel (SERT) on an "Contractual" basis to support the SERT operations and instructional teams.DUTIESThe successful applicant(s) will provide technical and emergency response support for the delivery of practical instruction and training, as well as support SERT operations. Courses will be primarily delivered at the SERT Centre in Stephenville, however, there may be a requirement to provide support at the Offshore Safety and Survival Centre (OSSC) in Foxtrap, and occasionally at various locations within Newfoundland & Labrador, and the Northwest Territories/Nunavut.Specific job duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct field level risk assessments and perform work as per the Integrated Management System.
  • Prepare and ready equipment for training exercises.
  • Conduct required inspections and maintenance.
  • Maintain facilities & equipment in a safe and serviceable condition.
  • Report defective facilities and equipment and follow appropriate lock-out/tag-out procedures.
  • Provide emergency response and first aid to personnel as required.
  • Control unsafe conditions and monitor the working conditions of facilities and equipment.
  • Preform site maintenance including snow clearing, painting, general clean up, etc.
  • Infrequent lifting of 100 lbs. maximum, with frequent lifting and /or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Assist the instructional team as required to deliver training and courses.
The duties outlined above are not intended to be exhaustive. The successful candidate will be familiarized on the roles and responsibilities as per the Integrated Management System during the hiring process.QUALIFICATIONSExperience (1-3 years) of relevant work experience; good written and verbal communication skills; strong computer application skills; class 5 valid driver licence as issued by the province of Newfoundland & Labrador. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in marine emergency duties and domestic vessel training; Valid Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross certification; STCW 95 Basic Safety and Survival Craft certification; Marine Advanced First Aid certification or equivalent; holding a certification that meets or exceed NFPA 1001 Level II.SALARY: $46,945 to $60,968 per annum - (Research and Technical Personnel III - NAPE Local 7405)CLOSING DATE: July 14, 2022COMPETITION NO.
