Job Description

Shining Waters Development Limited (Shining Waters) and its affiliates, located in Tantallon, Nova Scotia, are searching for an experienced Financial Controller to join their growing group of companies. They are looking for an ambitious, team-oriented professional, who is interested in rolling up their sleeves and getting involved with the daily financial oversite of the companies as the business continues to grow and explore endless business opportunities.Shining Waters’ diverse group of affiliates consists of 13 operating companies, 19 Subway franchises, the Development Agent for Atlantic Canada for the Subway Restaurant franchise, real estate holdings and developments, and a full-service boat marina and event facility (Shining Waters Marine). Their marina offers haul, boat storage, launch, deep water moorings, 54 serviced slips, fiberglass repairs and maintenance, engine repairs, sales and service for Tohatsu Outboards and Yanmar Marine engines and parts, electronic repairs and new installs, dockside fuel service and more. Meanwhile, Shining Waters Marines’ Full Service Event & Wedding Venue offers and events facility overlooking the picturesque St. Margaret’s Bay, hosting up to 200 people indoors and an additional 100 outdoors.In this role, Shining Waters is looking for the successful candidate to work in their team-oriented, hard-working atmosphere. As a leader to the Finance Team, the Controller will work closely with the group Chief Financial Officer, while facilitating timely and accurate management and financial reporting, while providing oversight and support to the full-cycle accounting function. They will contribute their knowledge and experience in an impactful way, working with a highly entrepreneurial, growth-minded team of leaders.Job ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the controller will work with and lead a team of hard-working, success driven colleagues to ensure all financial standards and procedures are in place and adhered to while providing accurate and timely financial reports to facilitate informed decisions by the leadership team. Examples of specific duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Work with the management team to ensure financial oversight of day-to-day company operations is optimal.
  • Maintain and enhance the finance and accounting functions of the organization, including monitoring and reporting on financial performance
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports related to the financial position of the organization; including revenues and expenses
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and year-end financial statements in a timely and accurate manner
  • Provide oversite and prepare full-cycle accounting and monthly close processes.
  • Ensure all financial and non-financial reporting requirements are met on a timely, regular basis, and in accordance with the appropriate/relevant Accounting Standards.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external accountants, banks, insurance, and any other external professionals relevant to our businesses.
  • Coordinate and/or prepare payroll using external payroll processor.
  • Coordinate and/or prepare all tax filings required during the year (i.e. HST, WCB, Income Tax, etc)
  • Assist business development with planning and budgeting.
  • Provide financial analysis support/guidance to management.
  • Monitor the financial policies, practices, and procedures of the operations.
  • Ensures the necessary internal controls to safeguard the company’s assets.
  • Participate and direct process improvement initiatives.
  • Provide oversight, guidance and training, and evaluate performance of accounting employees; recommending and implementing personnel actions, such as promotions and dismissals
  • Occasional work-related travel may be required in this position.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, or a related field, or equivalent.
  • Possession of a recognized professional accounting designation (CPA), considered an asset
  • 3+ years’ experience in a similar accounting role
  • Demonstrated professional development and career progression
  • Strong knowledge of finance, budgeting and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and full-cycle accounting
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suites, especially Excel
  • Experience using Sage 50 (or similar accounting software), considered an asset
  • Multi-team management experience, considered an asset
  • Excellent verbal, analytical, organizational and written skills
  • Strong work ethic and integrity
  • Strong organization and time-management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively identify and resolve problems
  • Must be able to adapt and operate effectively within new and challenging environments
