Job Description

Halifax Public Libraries invites INTERNAL and EXTERNAL applications for the position of Service Support at Tantallon Public Library. Serving the communities of Upper Hammonds Plains, St. Margarets Bay, and portions of the South Shore, including Peggys Cove, the library welcomes people of all ages to enjoy the many programs and services that are offered by staff and community partners.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESUnder the direction of the Branch Services Lead, the Service Support will:Public Service:

  • Answer basic customer inquiries in person and on the telephone. (i.e., directional questions such as branch hours, program times; standard program registrations); refer customers to appropriate staff as needed
  • Answer routine customer account inquiries on the telephone, following standard procedures.(i.e., items out on an account, return dates, renewals, and updating customer contact information); refer customers to appropriate staff as needed
  • Set up, take down and cleaning of rooms, equipment and supplies for programs/meetings
  • Assist with programs in the library and at community sites
  • Ensure audience safety, comfort and appropriate behavior at programs
Working with Materials Handling:
  • Check in materials
  • Lift, pack and unpack bins of library materials
  • Clear book drop
  • Sort and route materials and mail
  • Process holds and Borrow Anywhere, Return Anywhere (BARA) returns
  • Prepare items to send out to Home Delivery and Borrow by Mail clients
  • Shelve library materials
  • Maintain library materials in proper order
  • Move collections of library materials (e.g. shifting, storage)
  • Tidy branch/department and clean equipment
  • Assist with promotion and display of materials, programs and services
  • Retrieve and process items for circulation and collections action lists as well as floating materials for redistribution
  • Provide collection maintenance support:
  • Sort, process, repair or discard library materials
  • Resolve problem items (e.g. mismatches, missing pieces)
  • Using guidelines and procedures, enter and edit information in the database (ILS):
  • Handle mismatched items
  • Set items to Damaged status
  • Discard pre-selected items
  • Change the status of items (i.e. storage, trace)
  • Enter/edit customer information (i.e. phone number, email, enter paper registration forms into database)
DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKESEducation and Experience:
  • Completion of Grade Twelve (12) or equivalent & one (1) year of related experience (Related experience can come from a number of sources. (i.e., volunteer work, community work, customer service, hospitality, or retail experience.)
Requirements:
  • Read and write English
  • Sort in alphabetic and numeric order
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills including:
  • Functions of a web browser
  • Email applications
Assets:
  • Fluency in a second language
