Job Description

JOB OVERVIEWThe British Columbia Regional Council of Carpenters (“BCRCC”) is comprised of highly skilled individuals employed in the building trades industry in British Columbia. The BCRCC represents thousands of members across BC and provides members with a variety of services to support them in their careers, including benefits, pension, training and more!We are currently hiring a Representative to serve and grow our membership in northern BC. This is an exciting opportunity to work on one of the most important natural gas projects in Canada. If you are an outgoing leader, with a service mindset, who thrives under pressure with an upbeat outlook, then this is the career for you!This position reports directly to the Senior Representative overseeing the region and works as part of a team to perform a wide range of duties associated with organizing, including responding to calls and contacts from members and prospective members, representing members in workplace disputes, and effectively delivering organizing campaigns including employer research, recruitment and mentoring, and developing communications strategy. This position will identify areas of risk and opportunity related to collective bargaining, lead membership-based bargaining campaigns, communicate in clear language, and provide advice and guidance in difficult situations.The Representative will also be responsible to work with bargaining units and bargaining councils to develop collective agreement proposals and bargaining strategies; develop and implement industry standard agreements; review contract administration problems in bargaining units; negotiate collective agreements for single units and multiple units and with other unions in bargaining associations; participate in mediation to settle collective agreements; and the ratification of tentative agreements.   • Responsible for bargaining, including notices, providing advice, negotiating, drafting language (LOU’s, MOU’s etc.), minutes, finalizing agreements, and ensuring all administrative details.
  • Develop model contract language for collective agreements.
  • Research and review collective bargaining developments in the building trade sectors, track trends in working conditions, workplace issues and compensation systems and review legislative changes that might affect collective bargaining.
  • Review bargaining input from members and meet bargaining unit members, officers and staff and get input and develop proposals.
  • Provide advice on interpretation of collective agreement to locals, Senior Representatives, as well as elected officers and members.
  • Communicating via phone, email, text message, and in-person meeting with members and employers to respond to inquiries, solve problems, provide resources, and identify issues for elevation.
  • Utilize BCRCC software to assist members and colleagues and maintain databases with accurate and detailed information on worksites, workers, and assignments.
  • Maintain meticulous logs, records, and notes when dealing with member and employer concerns.
  • Investigate workplace issues in concert with the Senior Representative.
  • Work with Job Stewards and BCRCC leadership and representatives to represent members through the grievance process.
  • Mentor Job Stewards on representation matters and agreement interpretation.
  • Identify, recruit, train, develop, and support Job Stewards.
  • Provide a physical presence at job sites, the Kitimat office, and the Terrace office.
  • Manage cases within required and legislated timelines and maintain well organized ongoing case files.
  • Create and maintain lists and track information, which may include input on and operation of BCRCC databases and software.
  • Effectively communicate and engage members.
  • Act on behalf of supervisor as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Journeyman, Red Seal Carpenter OR Minimum of 1-2 years experience successfully organizing new bargaining units with demonstrated experience in the administration of collective agreements, grievance handling, and arbitration.
  • Certification in a trade is preferred.
  • Extensive experience of computer-based technology, including office software, internet, and e-mail environments.
  • Fluent in English, a second language is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly convey information and ideas both verbally and in writing.
  • Willingness to travel frequently within the region and on short notice.
  • Class 5 drivers’ licence and good driving record.
  • Access to a vehicle for work.
  • Ability to pass a criminal record check & travel to the United States.
  • Ability to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.
  • The successful candidate must reside within the Terrace/ Kitimat region during the position.

  • Excellent knowledge of labour values and labour legislation.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire others to achieve collective goals.
  • Ability to analyze, recognize mistakes, and recommend improvements.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of union and equity principles.
  • Experience with mediation, contract negotiation principles, collective bargaining, and conducting ratification votes.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • The ability to take initiative and work effectively both individually and as part of a team.
  • Well developed interpersonal skills, tact, sound judgment, and confidentiality.
  • Active listening and problem-solving skills.
