ATTENTION FOWARD FOCUSED LEADERS!A challenging and rewarding position awaits you in Thunder Bay with the Ministry of Transportations Remote Northern Transportation Office working to ensure safe and reliable transportation to remote communities.Working with a dynamic team in a fast paced environment, you will lead and manage the operation and maintenance of several remote airports and related equipment and infrastructure within an assigned zone over a large geographical area.ABOUT US:The Ministry of Transportations Remote Northern Transportation Office in Thunder Bay operates 29 airports. These are located in Ontarios far north, extending from the Manitoba border on the west to Hudsons Bay on the north and to the Quebec border on the east.   • Administer, direct and organize ministry staff, casual hires and contractors in the construction, operation and maintenance of several remote airports and related infrastructure within an assigned geographic zone in support of the ministrys remote northern transportation program.
  • Supervise construction of new airport facilities as well as major expansion and rehabilitation projects at existing facilities.
  • Organize and direct the operation, construction and maintenance of remote airports, road systems and ministry buildings within their zone using skilled and unskilled labour pools.
  • Plan and administer the annual maintenance program and capital projects for numerous remote airports and related infrastructure within an assigned zone to ensure the safe, effective and efficient construction and operation of the airport land and road systems.
  • Manage the airport operations and coordinates, reviews and directs all phases of the service functions within the zone.
  • Support the maintenance program of a large fleet of heavy equipment at each remote airport location.
How do I qualifyMandatory:
  • The successful candidate requires a valid Ontario Drivers License (Class “G”).
By Providing Strong Leadership Skills:
  • You demonstrate the leadership behaviours, attributes and mindsets to lead the OPS into the future.
  • You have the ability to be responsible for the overall compliance with legislative statutes, collective agreements, government and ministry policies, directives, guidelines and commitments related to programs and services.
  • You have sound judgement and political acuity skills to provide authoritative advice and guidance to senior management.
  • You have a passion for developing, building and leading organizational capacity through inclusive, positive, and values based leadership in areas of organizational design, recruitment, talent and performance management and labour relations matters.
  • You have the ability to manage and control allocated financial and material resources, including developing annual budgets, and managing assets and contract service providers.
By Providing Program Management, Analytical and Problem Solving Skills:
  • You have expertise in project management principles and methodologies to manage the delivery of program plans, initiatives and goals.
  • You will be responsible for the efficient and effective delivery of airport programs such as airport/building construction, pavement upgrades, mobilization of equipment and supplies.
  • You have the ability to coordinate, monitor and provide direction to contractors and consultants to maintain and improve airport infrastructure.
  • You are able to use judgment when coordinating, reviewing, and directing all phases of the service functions within the assigned geographic area.
By Providing Strong Communication and Relationship Management Skills:
  • You have strong oral and written communication skills to act as a liaison and contact for consultation between offices within the ministry, other ministries, agencies and Indigenous stakeholders/groups.
  • You have the ability to provide advice to Head of Operations and senior management and discusses matters of mutual concern, sensitive issues and policy clarification to ensure consistency in the administration and operation of a program.
  • You have experience interpreting and communicating policies and procedures, provides recommendations to staff, often from a distance, and works in locations where language barriers exist.
  • You have prior experience operating program specific and standard office software programs and tools to collect data on the program, conduct research and prepare own communication materials.
By Providing Technical Skills:
  • You have the ability to acquire knowledge in airport management, air transportation systems, related Ministry policies, aerodrome operations and maintenance, and construction procedures and practices.
  • You have the ability to acquire knowledge in federal airport legislation and standards, federal and provincial Occupational Health and Safety legislation, Highway Traffic Act, Federal and Provincial Environmental legislation, Federal and Provincial legislation and regulations of the transportation of dangerous goods, municipal by-laws, and the policies and guidelines for provincially operated airports.
