Questions about this collection of personal information should be directed to the Human Resources & Corporate Safety Division, 125 Syndicate Ave Suite 42, Thunder Bay, Ontario, P7E 6H8, Telephone: 625-3866Application forms must reference the competition number and be submitted to Human Resources by 11:59 p.m. on the closing date.Job Specific Information:Should this temporary vacancy be filled by a regular full-time employee, seniority and benefits will continue in the normal manner and the regular employee will continue to maintain normal, full-time status for the duration of the appointment.If it becomes known that the position is permanent, it will be reposted and filled in the normal fashion.POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Manager, maintains, deploys, and repairs Corporate computing equipment and associated datacentre requirements; provides functional guidance to division staff and Corporate or departmental clients as it relates to Technology Services enhanced solutions and the resolution of technical problems. Key responsibilities include analyzing equipment usage and making recommendations regarding expanding, upgrading, or consolidating, developing standards for equipment and assisting with specification and standards preparation, equipment replacement cycles, physical installation and configuration of equipment, and troubleshooting and repair services.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Installs, configures, and tests Corporate servers, storage devices, and personal computing equipment; collaborates with supply partners on installation as required; ensures initial operating system install is patched and up-to-date; ensures any firmware updates are at required levels; ensures that required RAID configurations are in place.
  • Troubleshoots hardware problems, taking or coordinating corrective action with supply partners/support agencies; participates in server recovery with other Section staff; automates and maintains procedures and software for initial install of operating systems and patch levels.
  • Participates in client and partner support at a Tier 1 and 2 level; documents and provides Tier 1 Section staff with resolution to facilitate future client support opportunities.
  • Performs initial install and setup of department-purchased hardware including, but not limited to, printers, CD burners, and scanners; recommends and documents standards for such equipment.
  • Co-ordinates hardware deployments and refresh cycles of Corporate servers and personal computing equipment; analyzes equipment lifecycle expectations, making recommendations to maximize usefulness of Corporate equipment; maintains and audits server warranty and maintenance agreements, ensuring that required components have coverage.
  • Assists the Manager – Networks, Technology & Cloud Services in preparing purchase specifications for Corporate computing equipment; provides assistance to Corporate departments purchasing computer equipment by recommending specifications.
  • Maintains Corporate datacentre(s) in regard to cabling, server racks, UPS and PDU, and power and cooling; researches and recommends datacentre improvements; maintains inventory of Corporate equipment and the storage of equipment in an organized and efficient manner; prepares obsolete equipment for disposal.
  • Monitors, analyzes, and reports on server and UPS utilization; makes recommendations regarding component upgrades, replacements, and server consolidation, ensuring the efficient use of existing infrastructure; ensures the security of physical hardware components and datacentre(s).
  • Works with Corporate clients and Section staff on server/datacentre/PC initiatives.
  • Participates or leads in researching, planning, determining resource allocation, evaluating hardware/datacentre solutions, providing recommendations, determining client and technology requirements, and developing hardware/datacentre specifications and cost effective solutions as it relates to project management-related activities.
  • Documents all aspects of the hardware/datacentre computing environment through the use of server specification forms, datacentre layout diagrams, power specifications, cable documentation, and standard operating procedures; ensures documentation is up-to-date and that all changes are reflected; provides updates and keeps Section staff aware of hardware/datacentre environment changes.
  • Works with Section staff to deliver seamless network solutions to clients.
  • Maintains effective and cooperative liaison with clients, staff, vendors, suppliers, service providers and staff in other organizations; maintains a high standard of public relations at all times.
  • Keeps abreast of new and converging hardware/datacentre technologies, making recommendations for improved performance, availability, security, and efficiencies.
  • Participates in Corporate-wide and cross-functional teams as required.
  • Performs the duties of other Networks, Technology & Cloud Services positions as required.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:Education/Experience
  • Degree in computer science, software engineering, or information systems, together with two years’ recent experience working with computer hardware components, electronics, and datacentre optimization; or
  • Diploma relating to computer networking and technical support, together with three years’ recent experience working with computer hardware components, electronics, and datacentre optimization; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills/Abilities:
  • Strong technical knowledge of computing hardware, network protocols and standards including IP networks, switches routers and Firewalls
  • Knowledge of business applications, software development, and the systems development/maintenance lifecycle
  • Superior ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing; with the ability to present ideas in a business friendly and user friendly language
  • Demonstrated attitude to excel at supporting client excellence
  • Strong understanding of organizational goals and objectives
  • Superior ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with other departments, co-workers, and business partners
  • Highly self motivated and directed
  • Proven analytical, evaluative and problem solving abilities
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high pressure environment
Assets:
  • Experience with SAN and NAS Technology; Intel-Based Server Configuration, and RAID Configuration
  • Experience in trouble-shooting and repairing PC’s
  • Experience in datacentre planning and documenting
  • Knowledge of the functions of City departments, outside boards, and local community groups
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)
  • May be required to work shifts or be “on call”
  • Will be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transportation
