Job Description

Alternative Secondary School ProgramSupport Worker 1 Full Time VacancyAREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:The Alternative Secondary School Program (ASSP) Support Worker’s primary responsibility is to coordinate, deliver and administer the Alternative Secondary School Program (ASSP), which includes the provision of quality educational activities and services to youth. The ASSP Support Worker will work in partnership with the Lakehead District School Board and other stakeholders, and will utilize a strengths-based, trauma-informed approach that promotes youth engagement and learning of urban Indigenous students, which ultimately supports their efforts in achieving their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preferred Community College, University Degree or equivalent in Social Services and/or a minimum of 3 years work experience in an educational or social services environment.
  • Knowledge of the education system, secondary education partners, and other related federal and provincial statutes.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture and experience working with Indigenous persons; understanding of the northern cultural environment; knowledge of an Indigenous language(s) will be considered an asset.
  • Ability to develop business plans (annual funding submission) and related documents.
  • Experience in community service delivery, coordination, and administration.
  • Group facilitation, team building and decision making skills; ability to problem solve and take initiative.
  • Self-motivated individual with the ability to work with minimal supervision in a team oriented setting.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and facilitate educational workshops and services.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including database applications.
  • Excellent case and file management skills, stress and time management skills, ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to engage youth to build trust and rapport; effective verbal and listening communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and/or weekends.
  • A clear Vulnerable Sector Clearance is a condition of employment.
  • Must have a valid Ontario Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
