Job Description

The Ministry of the Attorney General, Criminal Law Division, is seeking an experienced, dynamic and creative leader for the position of Crown Attorney for the Thunder Bay Crown Attorneys Office, North Region.What can I expect to do in this roleDuties will include:

  • Supervisory responsibility for the prosecution of all cases in the Superior and Ontario Courts of Justice
  • Conducting criminal prosecutions in the Superior and Ontario Courts of Justice
  • Overseeing the conducting of high-profile and media-sensitive criminal cases and related issues
  • Developing and maintaining effective relationships with criminal justice stakeholders, including Regional and Divisional staff; providing legal advice on criminal issues to the police, related agencies and other members of the criminal justice system
  • Managing all operations and legal and administrative staff of the Crown Attorneys office to ensure effective resource utilization, flexibility, accountability and quality assurance of criminal law and quasi-criminal law matters
  • Managing the development and implementation of operational and organizational changes, best practice standards and new initiatives such as electronic disclosure and case management, to maximize efficiencies
  • Managing the development of mentoring programs for legal and non-legal staff to ensure effective succession planning
  • Management of financial, administrative and human resource matters and processes in the Crowns office in accordance with relevant policies and directives
  • Promote an office culture that supports the Criminal Law Divisions business plan and strategic plan, the divisional strategic priorities and projects, in addition to the regional planning process
  • Promote, encourage, and drive innovation in all aspects of policies, processes, and procedures
  • Ensure a healthy and respectful work environment and support the Region and Regional Director in creating and promoting such an environment
  • Occasional travel (land or air) may be required to various locations within the North Region and or Province which include but not limited from Thunder Bay to Armstrong, Fort Hope, Geraldton, Longlac, Marathon, Nipigon, Ogoki Post Summer Beaver, Webequie
How do I qualifyMandatory
  • Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
Knowledge and Skills
  • Demonstrated experience in criminal law and litigation, thorough knowledge of the Crown Attorneys system, statutes, case law, justice processes, thorough knowledge of the Ministrys business plan and Divisions strategic and operational plan, policies and priorities
  • Demonstrated professional legal management skills in the criminal law area and the ability to identify and implement best practices and lead staff in a change environment
  • A commitment to support the Criminal Law Division and the Ministry to achieve deliverables
  • You have knowledge of the principles of law, statutes, and case law relating to the prosecution of criminal and quasi-criminal offences at all court levels
  • You have demonstrated strong judgement skills in evaluating and providing strategic and legal advice on criminal prosecutions
  • You can monitor and develop internal office processes to appropriately identify and safeguard victims interests as they arise
  • Experience managing and leading staff
  • Demonstrated strategic and business planning skills
  • Proven advocacy and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proven judgment, integrity and problem-solving abilities
  • Knowledge of financial and human resource practices and procedures
