Job Description

We are a dynamic community-based health centre promoting social justice and health equity in the Regent Park neighbourhood and east downtown area of Toronto. We operate out of several locations and provide a wide variety of services including: primary health care, chiropody, physiotherapy, health promotion, social work, community health, immigrant and refugee services, housing assistance, harm reduction and homeless programs, Pathways to Education for high school students, infant and child development programs, parenting education and family advocacy.Job SummaryAs a member of the Anti-Racism Action Program (ARAP), the Community Animators from the following language groups (Bengali, Arabic, and Vietnamese) will work with the ARAP team in support of the Regent Park Social Development Plan (SDP) initiatives. The Community Animator will utilize their local knowledge and experience to support and facilitate community engagement and co-design efforts with residents of Regent Park to promote social cohesion and inclusion within the community. In addition, they will utilize their language skills to build relationships with residents and community partners on the importance of racial healing, anti-racism learning and racialized trauma and its impact on residents and their community. In collaboration with the ARAP Project Coordinator, the work schedule and hours worked per week will be determined by project and community needs, which requires flexibility.This is a Hourly Contract position until March 31st, 2023. Staff will also have the opportunity to participate in HOOPP (Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan), and receive 4% vacation pay.Salary$32.16 per hourHoursup to 24 hours per monthApplication DeadlineDecember 6, 2022Responsibilities IncludeIn person and online community engagement:

  • Co-facilitation of online meetings and community events with residents and local stakeholders
  • Support towards content creation of outreach materials with Community Outreach Worker
  • Support the development and implementation of a communication and outreach strategy to increase engagement and awareness of ARAP’s ongoing work and initiatives
Conduct community outreach activities, including, but not limited to:
  • Sharing of posters, flyers and other outreach materials through community boards, online community platforms, door-door, etc.
  • Support towards social media outreach to connect residents to local events and opportunities
  • In person and online outreach connecting with residents via community events
  • Support towards data collection and project evaluation via focus groups, individual interviews, survey gathering and other assessment methods as required
Translation Support:
  • Read through original material and rewrite it in the target languages
  • If needed, translate oral communication from one language to another during speeches, meetings, community events, and conversation
  • Expert knowledge on translating social justice terminology in target languages
Other requirements:
  • Must be flexible and motivated, with a proven ability to multi-task and adapt to changing circumstances in a fast-paced environment.
  • Work with other community animators, team members and residents, in ways that are safe, inclusive, and anti-oppressive
  • Regular access to a computer/tablet (at home), the Internet and smartphone
  • Skills in word processing and spreadsheet programs or a willingness to learn these skills
  • And other duties, as assigned
Qualifications and Skills Required
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in English and target languages
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and to work independently
  • Knowledge of in person and online outreach and good understanding of social media platforms
  • Positive attitude and attention to detail with good multitasking and organizational ability
  • Experience participating in, or ideally, facilitating or leading community meetings
  • Ability to assess, respond and problem solve situations effectively and provide crisis intervention and conflict resolution support from a do no harm perspective.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and to work independently
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively with people of various cultural, age and economic backgrounds.
  • Living or has lived in the Regent Park area and/or knowledge of the Regent Park area, the revitalization process and ongoing issues affecting the community is an asset.
  • Must have up to date COVID-19 vaccination for the protection of clients and staff
