The TTCs recruitment efforts are directly aligned to its mission of providing "a reliable, efficient, and integrated bus, streetcar and subway system that draws its high standards of customer care from our rich traditions of safety, service and courtesy."General AccountabilityReporting to the Manager - Vehicle Engineering Services, the incumbent is responsible for implementing and coordinating Corporate and Legislative policies, and for developing and managing consistent Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) across all Carhouses, and Shop locations. Supports the various sections within the Streetcar Maintenance Department, and external departments such as Transportation, Training and Development, and Safety and Environment to develop and maintain Streetcar Rule Book with due consideration for TTC operational practices, Collective Bargaining Unit Agreement, and Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Environment requirements.Key Job Functions

  • Coordinating timely implementation of legislative and corporate policy for the Department.
  • Developing, creating, and revising policies, processes, and technical procedures as dictated by best practices, reliability analysis, audit results, corporate direction, government legislation, department initiatives, and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) maintenance manuals.
  • Liaising with supervisory personnel throughout the department to document and analyze current work procedures used for the operation of equipment, software systems, handling of emergencies, etc.
  • Creating and monitoring corrective and preventive engineering SWIS (Special Work Instruction Sheets) for reliability improvement.
  • Develop automated trend monitoring programs to identify failure trends for reliability and performance improvement.
  • Extracting and organizing information from these systems to assist in the preparation and monitoring of the operating and capital budgets for the department, and the key performance indicators (KPI).
  • Conducting various performance/conformance audits according to departmental SOP’s.
  • Developing and delivering SOP training to staff of the Streetcar Maintenance Department.
  • Participating in the TTC Customer Service Ambassador Program.
  • Responsible for treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed (if applicable and within their area of responsibility) in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service-provider and an employer.

Education and Experience
  • Completion of a post-secondary program in the field(s) of Electrical/Electronic or Mechanical Technology or Engineering with specific knowledge in electrical power and control systems, AC/DC motors, microprocessor-based controls and general mechanical systems or any combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • Completion of a post-secondary program in technical writing from an accredited institution, or demonstrated experience with technical writing, would be considered an asset.
Additional Requirements
  • Knowledge of streetcar maintenance practices, methods, policies, and procedures.
  • Excellent technical writing skills to prepare technical documents including maintenance, test/failure, exchange and standard operating procedures, and bulletins.
  • Sound judgement and well-developed technical, analytical, problem solving, verbal communication and technical report writing skills.
  • Experience in developing and delivering effective and engaging in-house technical training programs.
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with supervisory, technical and trades personnel in the Carhouses, shops and engineering groups regarding various vehicle maintenance issues, and with representatives of external supply organizations regarding vehicle specifications, modifications and equipment problems.
  • Sound judgment that is supported by strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and applications, including MS Office, AutoCAD, Draftsight and/or Solidworks, Adobe FrameMaker, Acrobat Pro, and Illustrator.
  • Familiarity with, or ability to quickly learn, the data and methodologies of the Material Management System (IFS) and MAXIMO.
  • Proficiency, with demonstrated ability, in structured/unstructured document authoring and design using Adobe FrameMaker, or equivalent XML-based authoring tools, would be considered an asset.
  • O.A.C.E.T.T. certification as an Engineering Technologist, P.E.O. registration as a Professional Engineer or Engineer-in-Training would be considered an asset.
  • Must be able to pass the TTC Training & Development department’s Subway Rule Book and other work-related training.
