We are committed to embedding these principles into all the work we do, reducing barriers so that students from all backgrounds and lived experiences can feel a sense of belonging in the communities they find here.To align with our strategic priorities, and the specificities of this role, we encourage individuals from Indigenous communities to apply.Your opportunity:Under the direction of the Director of the Office of Indigenous Student Services, the incumbent will be responsible for the development, implementation and/or coordination of activities that encourage student development. To achieve this, the Indigenous Student Life Coordinator, working with other offices at the Indigenous Student Services/First Nations House (e.g. Elders in Residence) will assist in the organization of programming that supports personal, leadership and spiritual growth for students. In addition, the Indigenous Student Life Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the promotion of First Nations House within the institution (e.g. student fairs, orientations, divisional activities); and support the Indigenous Recruitment Officer in the implementation of coordinating outreach activities at the University (e.g. Summer Mentorship Program, Jr. Deep, SOAR). The Indigenous Student Life Coordinator is also responsible for the coordination of annual department events (e.g. Indigenous Education Week, Fall Gathering potluck). The incumbent will refer students to the appropriate resources upon request; develop and maintain avolunteer list; and as necessary, develop and maintain student records.The incumbent will be responsible for all communications for the department, including but not limited to the maintaining the departmental website and listserv; oversee departmental social media outlets, development of promotional material (print and digital) and interacting with the appropriate communication network within the university (e.g. Strategic Communications, Student Life).The Indigenous Student Life Coordinator oversees work-study students, either directly supervising or supporting student staff; is the liaison to the Indigenous Students’ Association and other student bodies; and serves as the 2nd contact for the department in the absence of the Director.Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and implementing components of curricular and/or co-curricular programs and activities
  • Planning and overseeing the implementation of an evaluation framework for programs and initiatives
  • Conducting detailed analysis on program efficiency and student learning outcomes to inform program planning activities
  • Implementing plans and process improvements for program and service activities
  • Promoting experiential learning opportunities
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars
  • Screening and making referrals to academic advising and learning skills programs and other resources or services
  • Developing strategies that maximize outreach to students
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum four years related experience working with Indigenous communities/agencies and peoples in a community and/or life skills development role.
  • Minimum two years in a student life programming role preferably in a post-secondary setting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to create, compose, edit written materials.
  • Excellent presentation, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Excellent program development and implementation skills and excellent relationship building skills.
  • Working knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, web software (e.g. Dreamweaver) and design software (e.g. Creative Suite). A good degree of social media experience is required.
  • Tact and diplomacy; ability to work in a team environment;build partnerships and collaborate across the University.
  • Strong knowledge of the diverse Indigenous traditions, values and cultural protocols; along with an understanding of services and resources available in the Greater Toronto Area.
  • Knowledge of educational issues/barriers (e.g. educational history, funding access) and wider community concerns (i.e. housing, family concerns, economic).
