Globally, we manage over 320 million square feet of client portfolios across 30,000+ locations in North America, Europe, Middle East, Australia and Asia.Further information is available at www.bgis.comSUMMARYThe Manager, Database Operations is a role within BGIS’ database environments which leads the research, design, planning, implementation and support of existing and emerging database technologies, as well as the other Database Administrators (DBA’s) on the Team. The incumbent will take ownership of ongoing activities relating to database security, performance tuning, database upgrades, capacity planning, backup and recovery procedures and problem resolution. The incumbent will have significant input to our database platforms strategic roadmaps, providing licensing oversight, and align with industry best practices. The incumbent will also ensure that other DBA’s are held accountable to these standards and mentor them in the proper approach towards systems design, configuration, documentation, and management.KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESPeople LeadershipDemonstrates strong, competent leadership for team members to guide them in reaching their full potential and meeting their objectives, which supports achievement of our corporate goals. Specifically, these responsibilities include but not limited to:Full involvement with recruiting talentProvides mentoring, coaching and guidance to all team membersObjectively recommends compensation adjustmentsManages all aspects of performanceDatabase ManagementPossesses the ability to express IT technology decisions in terms of business outcomes by persuasively communicating ideas or positions that build support agreement or commitmentThoroughly understands database principles and methodologies and their connection to a variety of complex applications/systemsActs as the Lead of Databases in strategic planning, implementing database architecture, database design, and integration with other BGIS systems, problem notification, and availability reporting for databasesMaintains up-to-date knowledge of technology standards, industry trends, emerging technologies, and software development best practices. Principal researcher to support our existing and emerging database platforms including but not limited to (RAC, ASR,ASAM, RMAN, Data Guard, Golden Gate, TOAD, Oracle Database Appliance)Maintains all service delivery operations and service levels for database applications and services in all environmentsConducts database performance tuning and capacity planningCoordinates database administration duties with System/Network Administrators to ensure compatibility with hardware and operating systems configurationsCreates and maintains architectural designs for current and future RDBMS layoutsEnsures to follow change management best practices to database environment following pre-defined change management policies and procedures using ITIL frameworkOversees and manages database backup and recovery strategy (online/offline backup and recovery)Plans database software upgrades from test through to production. Coordinates and works with stakeholders as required to ensure testing is thorough resulting in minimal business impactProvides monthly KPI reportsIn conjunction with Senior Director, I T Operations, manages department budgetRisk ManagementDevelops and oversees effective disaster recovery policies and standards to align with enterprise business continuity management program goals; coordinate the development of implementation plans and procedures to ensure that business-critical services are recovered in outage; provides direction, support, and in-house consulting in these areasOversees and manages database backup and recovery strategy (RMAN – online/offline backup and recovery)Establishes appropriate security framework to secure database objects to comply with industry standards and security auditsStakeholder ManagementProvides SME advice to the customer, and internal & external stakeholdersFosters an environment of collaboration and a strong customer service cultureBuilds relationships with vendors and service providers to ensure efficient and cost-effective acquisition of technology purchases; oversees service level agreement escalation and contract negotiationsIn conjunction with Manager, Systems Integration/Process, responds to Customer RFI’s and RFP’sContinuous ImprovementBuilds, develops, and manages the enterprise technology services organization, consisting of direct reports and indirect reports.Sets, monitors, provides and reinforces overall team performance feedback including performance improvement and decisions/approvals with respect to rewards redeployment and terminationImproves DBA performance through the application of original thinking to existing and emerging methods, processes, products and servicesEmploys sound judgment in determining how innovation will be deployed to produce more effective and efficient DBA operationsDevises unusual or radically different approaches to deliver value-added solutionsContinuously re-evaluates the infrastructure for optimization opportunitiesKNOWLEDGE & SKILLSUniversity Degree in Computer Science with 5-10 years of relevant job experienceExceptional leadership skills with the ability to communicate a vision that inspires and motivates DBA staff and aligns to the IT and business strategyEffective influencing and negotiation skills in an environment where resources may not be in direct control of this roleExcellent service management planning and execution skillsStrong IT operations acumen including cross domain knowledgeExperience and budget planning and financial managementSuccess in leveraging both traditional practices such as IT service management as well as emerging methods such as Dev ops that are optimized for agilityDemonstrated ability to develop and execute a plan that ensures that the right people are in the right role at the right time and that employees are highly engaged and satisfiedStrong vendor management and partner relations skills to identify and leverage resources internal and external to the enterprise to enhance capabilities that support business objectives.Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to explain technical concepts and technologies to senior leaders and business concepts to the DBAsLeadership, communication, delegation and mentoring skillsProficiency with different database technologies (Oracle, SQL, MySQL.)Hands-on setup and tuning of Oracle database for High Availability and performance objectivesExtensive knowledge in Oracle advanced features such as, RAC, OEM, Grid control, Data Guard & Golden GateDatabase monitoring and high-availability setupsThorough understanding of database principles and methodologies and their connection to a variety of complex applications/systemsAbility to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple, concurrent and conflicting priorities and deadlines in a fast pace, dynamic and changing environmentSuperior skills in database security ensuring the security and integrity of all corporate application databasesSolid verbal and written communication skillsAbility to work independently with minimal supervision in a team environmentExceptional and proven technical, analytical, organizational and time management skillsGood customer service skills, with a clear understanding of customer impact and business requirementExtremely developed troubleshooting/problem solving skills required to troubleshoot a diverse and complex range of applications and associated database issuesAbility to think outside the box and beyond the current solution to identify new and improved solutions or alternativesExcellent knowledge of server operating system tools and commands (Linux/Windows)Basic understanding of project management methodologiesAdvanced understanding industry best practices/standards ensuring key practices are continually incorporated into the BGIS environmentTechnical writing skills including documentation of proceduresAt BGIS we believe that diversity and inclusion is a key business driver, such that we never lose sight of its importance as it is woven into the fabric of our organization.
