The department promotes a vital and diverse economy by managing transportation safety, supporting municipalities with public transportation and water/wastewater facilities, expanding and enhancing a well-integrated transportation system and enabling market access, preserving and developing the provincial highway network and water management infrastructure.For more information about Ministry of Transportation, visit our website at :RoleAre you looking for meaningful highway operations work that offers technical variety plus the opportunity to spend time in the field Want to help us keep Alberta’s highways safe Then consider joining the District Operations in the Valleyview office as a Maintenance Contract Inspector.In this role, your primary responsibility will be overseeing the summer and winter highway maintenance programs for one or more contracted maintenance areas and ensuring the safety and convenience of the motoring public. This will involve working in partnership with highway maintenance contractors in planning maintenance activities, determining what maintenance work is necessary, monitoring the work of contractors, administering the maintenance budget, communicating with external stakeholders such as the RCMP and local municipalities, and responding to public concerns. You will also perform other related duties, which will vary depending on the region’s requirements.The Maintenance Contract Inspector role requires strong knowledge of highway maintenance, traffic safety issues, traffic management, roadway design and structure, and budget control. You must be able to identify roadway failure and recommend appropriate responses to the many situations that occur in the highway network as well as be able to inspect and confirm work carried out by the highway maintenance contractor is undertaken and completed in accordance with contract specifications and budgetary levels.QualificationsThe minimum requirement for this role are a 2 year Diploma in Engineering or Science plus 7 years related experience. Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.Applicants must be eligible for registration in ASET (Association of Science and Engineering Technology) and have a valid driver’s license.Preference will be given to those who have the following experience;

  • Extensive knowledge of highway maintenance
  • Ability to work collaboratively with contractors to successfully complete activities
  • Communicate effectively with public and other agencies as well as internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong understanding of roadway design and structure
  • Ability to identify roadway failure and recommend appropriate economic responses
  • Knowledge of traffic safety issues and traffic management
