Job Description

Job Posting: Communications Coordinator, Full Time, 32 hours per week, Hybrid WorkOccupying traditional territories that span from Cortes Island to Toba Inlet, Klahoose First Nation has existed since time before memory. Our primary village site, Squirrel Cove, is home to approximately seventy-five full-time residents who live and work on Cortes Island and in the surrounding areas. The remaining three hundred and nine members reside off reserve in areas such as coastal communities, the lower mainland and in Washington State, etc. We are currently searching to hire a Communications Coordinator, who will live on Cortes Island or the surrounding area.About The PositionThis is a new position for Klahoose First Nations, and therefore we are looking for candidates who will bring their experience in developing an internal communication plan and have the ability to set up our social media presence. You will work with the Administrator and leadership to develop communication streams with regards to business initiatives, programs offered to members as well as written materials for government proposals.Although you will be able to work remotely, preference will be given to candidates who live on Vancouver Island and who can easily travel to Cortes Island, BC for meetings, events, etc.ResponsibilitiesAdministration

  • Manage information email, answering incoming emails and forwarding to the appropriate department for action.
  • Create monthly newsletter for members.
  • Assist in the preparation and distribution of press releases, newsletters, brochures, fact sheets, display materials, and other communications materials.
  • Mentor junior member within the communications role for succession planning.
Communications
  • Working with the Administrator, evaluate current communication strategies to share information with the community, First Nations partners and government agencies.
  • Work with department managers to understand their needs and assist with communication of information to members, staff, and agencies within their area of responsibilities.
  • Plan, organize, and implement various communications initiatives on behalf of the nation.
  • Create communications calendar for Klahoose First Nation to ensure monthly information is available to members and staff.
Website, Media and Social Media
  • Write and design regular content for website and newsletter.
  • Be first point of contact for all media calls and direct to the Administrator or Chief.
  • Review current website and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Manage website, updating specific events and adding information for members.
  • Create social media strategy and templates for consistency of the Klahoose story.
  • Create and post regular content on social media platforms on an ongoing basis.
  • Initiate and maintain outreach to local, regional, and national media outlets.
  • Prepare Klahoose narrative to assist and prepare managers for media interviews for events or news happening for the Nation.
What You BringEducation and Work Experience:
  • Post-secondary education in the areas of Public Relations, Media Relations, Journalism, Marketing or Communications.
  • 2-4 years of relevant work experience writing editorial content, articles, and media relations.
  • Previous working knowledge of First Nations or Indigenous culture a definite asset.
  • You will comply with submission of:
  • Criminal Records Check, including Vulnerable Sectors.
  • Current driver’s License and Driver’s Abstract.
  • Oath of Confidentiality; and
  • Ability to take direction from the Administrator and work well with Managers.
  • Preference will be given to Klahoose members, followed by first nation individuals.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Clear writing skills in plain language and proofreading skills with the ability to copy-edit materials with a high level of detail.
  • Fast knowledge of social media tools (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram)
  • Good knowledge of website content management systems and analytical tools (e.g. Wix, Adobe CQ5, Google Analytics).
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others in a variety of settings while exercising tact, diplomacy, and professionalism.
  • Ability to use, edit and publish digital photography and videography.
  • Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to produce content with a high level of detail and accuracy.
  • Proficient in the use of image and video editing software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite).
  • Proficient in the use of standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
