Why UsAt NRSI we value our people and strive to provide a healthy work-life balance and a safe work environment.We offer a competitive hourly wage, the opportunity to work with other highly experienced staff, and career growth opportunities by promoting from within our organization.Your Contribution to NRSINRSI is looking for up to two (2) motivated individuals with expertise in terrestrial/wetland ecological field monitoring to join our growing team.The successful applicants will be based out of our Waterloo, Ontario office and will be expected to regularly participate in field monitoring activities for a variety of wildlife and/or vegetation survey types throughout southern Ontario, as well as contribute to office-based tasks. The primary duties and responsibilities for this role include:

  • Leading field surveys for one or more of: vegetation, birds, herpetofauna, bats, or wetlands, among others,
  • Taking well-organized and detailed field notes,
  • Communicating frequently and as required with project managers, other field staff, and clients, and;
  • Assisting with a variety of office-related tasks such as conducting background reviews, preparing Terms of Reference, contributing to reporting and proposals, among others.
Your Education:
  • A degree in Biology or Environmental Sciences.Similar educational experience will also be considered.
Requirements:
  • A valid driver #39;s license and over 18 years old in order to drive a rental or company vehicle.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Minimum of one (1) field season of experience in planning and leading surveys for at least one (1) of the following: vascular plant inventories, vegetation community mapping, birds, herpetofauna, or bats.
  • Willing and able to travel for regular multi-day field surveys, sometimes in remote locations, under inclement weather, in a variety of environmental conditions, and occasionally for long hours.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail, including the maintenance of well-organized and detailed field notes.
Assets:
  • A reliable personal vehicle insured for work purposes (authorized mileage will be reimbursed).
  • Certifications in ELC and the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES).
  • Holding or working towards Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture or Registered Professional Forester (Full Member) with the Ontario Professional Foresters Association.
  • Experience in: completing surveys for pollinators/insects, mammals, fish, mussels; ecohydrology and assessing headwater drainage features; or, habitat restoration projects.
  • Experience with project management, proposal preparation, and writing environmental impact study reports.
