Job Description

Standpipes and Bunkers Waste Retrieval System Supervisor (SBWRS)Canadian Nuclear Laboratories - Whiteshell is setting the standard with their ground-breaking, first of a kind piece of equipment that will set the standard for nuclear decommissioning projects in Canada and resonate around the world.The Whiteshell Waste Management Area (WMA), located approximately 2.7 km north-east of the main Whiteshell site near Pinawa, Manitoba. The WMA is used to store low and intermediate level solid radioactive waste, low level liquid organic radioactive waste and small volumes of hazardous industrial chemicals. Waste stored at the WMA include waste generated since the earliest days of operation of WL, as well as that generated during the current decommissioning activities and ongoing operations.The waste retrieval will be done using First of a Kind Equipment (FOAKE)—the Standpipes and Bunkers Waste Retrieval System (SBWRS). It can essentially be described as remotely operated mobile hot cells that are designed to safely retrieve the waste for transport to the Sorting and Conditioning Unit (SCU). In the SCU the wastes will be analyzed, characterized, segregated, and packaged using a variety of remote operated systems including the Predator Remote Operated Manipulator Arms (ROMA) system, hot spot cameras, and High Purity Germanium and Lanthanum Bromide gamma spectroscopy among others. The wastes will be segregated (Low Level Waste, Intermediate Level Waste and Fissionable Material) and packaged into appropriate containers where they will then be transferred to the Cask Loading Facility for final analysis and packaging for transport for long term storage.This project is a great opportunity for the successful candidates to gain invaluable experience that will make them leaders in waste management, decommissioning and remediation within the Canadian nuclear industry.**This position will be required to travel to Toronto for an extended period of time during training 6-12 months.**Current working hours: 40 hours and may be required to perform shift work and work in rotation - Monday to Thursday 6:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.Job SummaryStandpipe and Bunker Waste Retrieval System (SBWRS) operations will consist of the operation of the Standpipe Headworks (SPH), Standpipe Waste Retrieval System (SWRS), the Bunker Waste Retrieval System (BWRS) and the Sorting and Conditioning Unit (SCU). This position will support the Stand Pipe and Bunker Waste Removal System (SBWRS) Design/Fabrications/Testing/Training/Coaching at Whiteshell Laboratory near Pinawa Manitoba Canada within the Waste Management Area (WMA) and will require travel to the Greater Toronto area in Ontario, Canada to support the Development and Training of equipment being tested for Commissioning at Whiteshell.This position will require Whiteshell Laboratories’ full training and procedure compliance to operate within the WMA as well as obtaining and maintaining a class 2 security clearance.This project is expected to be executed for a period of approx. 4 years at the Whiteshell site in Pinawa, Manitoba.CNL Employees perform all duties in accordance with established health and safety and regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (i.e. utilizing personal protective equipment as per safe work procedures). Notifies management or supervisor of all occurrences, injuries, illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm themselves, their co-workers or any other on the premises in a timely manner and in accordance with established reporting requirements.QualificationsEducation

  • Graduation from an institute of technology or equivalent with a minimum of six years’ experience in industrial manufacturing and/or construction, including 5 years of supervisory experience in the nuclear industry.
  • A formal education in the nuclear engineering/sciences/technology is an asset.
Experience
  • Experienced in remotely operated machines and equipment in the nuclear industry.
  • Must have a technical and mechanical background with preferred knowledge of scientific and remote operations.
  • 2-3 years’ experience coaching and supervising a multi-disciplined team.
  • Must have experience making educated and critical decisions within a complex work environment.
Abilities and SkillsThe incumbent should have:
  • Inspire and lead a multi-disciplined team of engineers, technologists, scientists, radiation protection personnel, tradesperson, and others;
  • Demonstrated ability to assume responsibilities;
  • Read and understand specifications and drawings and interpret complex construction and fabrications drawings;
  • Effectively establish 3 way communications with clear and precise directions both verbally and in writing to fellow staff members;
  • An up to date working knowledge of all applicable company and general safety regulations, procedures and union agreements;
  • Be self-motivated, have a good tactful and diplomatic manner, sound judgement and organizational abilities;
  • A willingness to undergo additional training appropriate to the position (e.g., computers, quality assurance, applicable codes and team building skills, in the field training);
  • Promote safety and good housekeeping practices and instruct employees in the same;
  • Ensure that Whiteshell (and testing location) rules, regulations, policies and union agreements are observed;
  • Have knowledge of current facility management and maintenance management practices;
  • Must be able to communicate and report to the management effectively and frequently;
  • Be aware of the schedule and cost relationship;
  • Initiative and judgement to organize and maintain flow of work and accuracy of records;
  • Must be punctual, dependable and safety minded;
  • Detail oriented with the ability to meet deadlines;
  • Exceptional organizational skills, able to prioritize and time management is required;
  • Ability to understand detailed information is essential;
  • Demonstrates responsibility and is accountable for accurately handling the details associated with one’s work;

  • Able to work extended hours and off normal work shifts to support project needs.
  • Job/Industry Specific Knowledge;
  • Must be able to coordinate with the field staff;
  • Must be able to interact with the radiation protection team to ensure radiation safety protocols are observed;
  • Must be knowledgeable of Occupation Health and Safety (OSH) procedures.
Functions and ResponsibilitiesFunctions and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • This position will require the supervision of moving material, both Radiological and non-Radiological, within the Waste Management Area/ Protected Area (WMA/PA);
  • This position will require a high level of attention to details and critical thinking;
  • System Supervisors will be required to qualify as a Control Room Supervisor (CRS) as well. All System Supervisors will rotate thru the CRS position during SBWRS normal operations;
  • Required to work in a Radiological Area(s), Wear respiratory Personal Protection Equipment (PPE);
  • Required to troubleshoot equipment and offer resolution(s) via remote monitor(s);
  • Assist with preparing procedures, work plans, packages, hazard analysis, and route sheets;
  • Monitors work in progress and reports as required;
  • Required to follow procedures and lead fellow staff members in the execution of procedure performance;
  • Give pre-job briefs and post job reviews of operational tasks;
  • Maintain conduct in the Control Center (CC) to minimize distractions to operators;
  • Stop work should a test deviation arises or criteria deviation occurs;
  • Provide coaching to staff as required;
  • Perform accurate and detail shift turnovers, including shift logs (if applicable);
  • Ensure the procedures are marked up and observation details are noted;
  • Ensure the daily log is maintained;
  • Report the executive summary of daily activities to the management;
  • Approving time cards;
  • Participating in the employment cycle of their direct reports;
  • Maintains confidentiality in all matters.
