Job Description

*This is a term position ending December 2023*Responsibilities:

  • Provides current and prospective students with accurate and appropriate information about the University’s academic programs, course offerings and degree requirements.
  • Makes independent and individualized decisions on the advisability of course load and evaluates the need for referral to other services within the University.
  • Advises students who wish to withdraw from courses, programs, or the University.
  • Advises students who fail required courses or students who fail to meet requirements.
  • Can approve a “course overload” based on discussions with the student as to his/her individual academic needs.
  • Is authorized to sign Letters of Permission for courses taken at other universities and to correspond with other university advisors to make a comparison of credits and degree requirements.
  • Advises students with grievances against or questions about Senate regulations or University policy.
  • Authority to submit back date course withdrawals, submit permission to register and pre-requisite waivers for Education or Developmental Studies courses.
  • Utilizes independent, creative problem-solving techniques and reasoning in resolution of grievances or any issue that arises.
  • Refers students to campus resources such as Student Wellness, Tutoring, Accessibility Services etc.
  • Represents the Faculty at recruitment events such as Future Student Night, Open House, High School counsellor’s seminars, etc.
  • Delivers instructional orientation to prospective, returning, and new students entering the Program.
  • Actively participates in internal committees and represents the University externally.
  • Assimilates and interprets information from a variety of sources and areas to aid in program evaluation and development.
  • Is accountable for maintaining and updating Faculty of Education student records and files.
Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in a related discipline is required (B.Ed. degree preferred)
  • At least three years of directly related academic advising experience, including some background in providing group presentations and orientations.
  • Must have a thorough and precise knowledge of B.Ed., BA,B.Sc. and BPHE degree requirements and of University policies and Senate regulations.
  • Experience with recruitment activities preferred.
  • Experience in developing and delivering group presentations.
  • Experience with software such as Microsoft 365, adobe, colleague preferred.
  • Must have well developed written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have highly developed organizational skills.
  • Must have highly developed active listening skills.
  • Must be able to create and foster a caring atmosphere and relationship with students.
  • Must be able to interpret and administer policies and regulations within broad guidelines.
  • Must be able to work independently and make independent judgements and decisions.
  • Must be able to recognize, diagnose and interpret student abilities, goals and personal variables.
  • Must be able to identify problem areas and provide consistent solutions.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively and effectively with other staff and departments.
  • Must display sensitivity to student needs as well as initiative.
  • Must be able to adapt to a cross-cultural setting.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various levels of internal and external contacts.
An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.Condition(s) of Employment:
