Job Description

Location: Winnipeg or Brandon, ManitobaPosition details: Full Time Contract (18 months) Position and start date dependent on pending funding confirmationThe Aquatic Conservation Biologist will play an integral role in delivering Stewardship and Science in all 9 Natural Areas of the Manitoba Region – Tall Grass Prairie, Riding Mountain, Whitemouth River Watershed, Oak Lake Sandhills and Wetlands, West Souris Mixed-Grass Prairie, Souris River Valley Grassland, St Lazare Plain / East Parklands, Interlake and Assiniboine Delta to focus our conservation work.The Aquatic Conservation Biologist will contribute to NCC’s work in Manitoba by assisting Stewardship and Science staff with several activities, including coordinating and implementing effectiveness monitoring, landscape-scale and property-scale conservation planning, implementing priority PMP and Natural Area Conservation Plan (NACP) actions, and conducting science projects.Extensive travel and independent fieldwork requires liaising with landowners, staff, volunteers and partner organizations.Key Responsibilities:Conservation:

  • Lead the development, coordination, implementation and reporting of Effectiveness Monitoring Programs to track the viability of Biodiversity Targets and the effectiveness of conservation actions to abate threats at the property and Natural Area scale to guide property management;
  • Collaborate with external partners, academics, youth groups, and communities on aquatic species at risk recovery, monitoring and other multi-scale conservation initiatives to support the implementation of Natural Area Conservation Plans and the National Strategic plan
    • Provide theoretical and technical expertise on ecological habitat and processes in support of evidence and adaptive management-based landscape, property-level and multi-species at risk-focused strategies and plans.
  • Assist in the development of Property Management Plans, and Natural Area Conservation Plans following NCC’s standardized report format;
  • Undertake biological inventory, field data collection and annual monitoring (I.e. invasive species, plant and wildlife documentation, ecological community classification and condition assessments);
  • Coordinate or conduct literature reviews and science research projects to answer key knowledge gaps;
  • Lead or assist with grant development and reporting
  • Manage and supervise interns or contract staff
  • Assist with Conservation Volunteer Events in all Natural Areas; and
  • Other field and office duties as assigned.
This position requires the ability to travel throughout Manitoba with some overnight and potential weekend work. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.Position Requirements
  • University graduate from a Natural Sciences program with a focus on aquatic biology, aquatic ecology, or related field. College Diploma and Certificate combined with experience post-graduation will be considered;
  • Demonstrated experience with project planning and management, and working on interdisciplinary teams; experience in adaptive management frameworks and the Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation considered an asset;
  • Experience in collecting, organizing and analyzing natural resource and socio-economic data, including demonstrated ability to statistically analyze and summarize patterns and results;
  • Knowledge of aquatic community types and ecology; general knowledge of prairie and forest ecology, or hydrology considered an asset.
  • Ability to monitor ecological health
  • Working knowledge of Manitoba landscapes, communities, and conservation issues;
  • Ability to independently take a project from background research to action in a short period of time;
  • Experience in designing, implementing, analyzing and reporting on the effectiveness of stewardship, restoration and other conservation activities;
  • Experience in developing technical reports, scientific papers, monitoring protocols and presentations;
  • Proficient in computer usage, including data entry, statistical analysis, Internet and MS Office applications;
  • Navigation experience and skills using map and compass, and GPS;
  • Working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems, data management and the use of ArcMap to create maps for fieldwork and proposal writing;
  • Analytical and detail oriented; creative and proactive thinker;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently (with attention to detail), seek assistance and input as required and to work on interdisciplinary teams;
  • Supervisory and project management experience is preferred;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and technical writing skills;
  • Strong interest in the environmental field and the vision and mission of NCC;
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License, with access to vehicle;
  • Able to work under adverse climatic conditions
  • Ability to work independently, be self motivated, and display superior time management skills, attention to detail, as well as the ability to meet deadlines;
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to interact with the public and youth to convey a conservation message, and work with community leaders and conservation partners;
