Job Description

The Transload Operations Supervisor for Central Manitoba Railway oversees all Transload Operations and related activities operated both at the Central Manitoba Railway and satellite locations; and is wholly responsible for the safe and efficient execution of all services provided. The Supervisor will ensure the Central Manitoba Rail Service and Safety Management Plan is followed, ensuring customer commitments are met safely and on time.General ResponsibilitiesSafety

  • Actively participates in the execution of Central Manitoba Railways Safety Management Plan and Initiatives including audits and reports
  • Manages the operational testing program by observing, documenting, and evaluating safe work practices per Safety and Operating/Transload Rules, communicating results, and utilizing the escalation process, if necessary
  • Facilitates employee meetings to emphasize safety and discuss safety risks
  • Investigates accidents and incidents, determines root cause, and resolves or escalates
  • May serve as a first responder to critical incidents
Service Delivery
  • Ensures the Transload department is providing superior service in keeping with Central Manitoba Railways Vision, Mission and Values
  • Supports daily and weekly operating plans for the team ensuring customer needs are being met
  • Coordinates Transload activities with the other departments ensuring shop services, maintenance of way, and operating activities are provided on an as required basis
  • Monitors reporting activities of the Transload crews to confirm appropriate activities are executed, and inventory and releases are accurate and billing is up to date; assists in the continual monthly reviews of the Transload budget
Management and Administration
  • Assists in managing monthly Transload budgets, service plans, personnel development plans, and resource requirements for the department
  • Interprets legislation, regulations, policies, rules and procedures as they relate to the departments services and employees
  • Manages the relationship between the department and its customers
  • Works in conjunction with the management team with respect to product line development and customer interfacing for existing, new and potential ventures in order to develop the business arm
  • Assists in managing the departments human resources including participation in hiring, coaching, leading activities, monitoring payroll and WCB functions Responsible for maintaining standard operating procedures, operating the department safely and meeting all regulatory requirement
Leadership & Employee Development
  • Influences and inspires others to achieve company objectives
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with peers, customers and Class 1 contacts
  • Leads others in adapting to innovative work environments and ensures awareness on departmental initiatives, decisions, and policies are communicated
  • Provides for the delivery of training and developmental requirements related to the department
  • Trains team members and provides relief to the Operations department; provides assistance and expertise to all departments to ensure operating plans achieves success
Skills, Knowledge, and AbilitiesQualifications
  • Communicates effectively both orally and in writing with people of all backgrounds and levels of comprehension including managers, employees, customers, and the public
  • Demonstrates initiative to work with others to foster a respectful workplace; creates a work environment that is open to maintaining positive relationships; empowering individuals and teams to set and accomplish goals with objectives
  • Understands effective cost monitoring, control, reporting, and bottom-line profitability and accountability
  • Knowledge of equipment, systems, standard operating practices, and regulations governing Canadian rail operations
  • Ability to exercise discretion and good judgement in providing information to internal or external customers in a courteous and tactful manner with regard to sensitive or confidential issues
  • Ability to handle a diverse range of responsibilities in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Proficient in the use of computer equipment, operating systems, word processing, spreadsheets and database software
  • Ability to hold and maintain a valid drivers license; maintain current safety critical medical status and valid CROR qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Minimum four (4) years experience working in a railway operating environment
  • Minimum of one to two years in a leadership or supervisory position
  • Experience with marketing, sales and customer service in the railway industry is an asset
  • Minimum Railway Operations Supervisor, Conductor or Locomotive Engineer qualification would be an asset
