The Uniter is seeking a dedicated, politically minded and well-connected person to fill the role of city editor. This person should have experience and a passion for writing about such topics as local news, student issues, community events, Wesmen athletes and more.Successful candidates should feel comfortable running a team of contributors, assigning and editing their work, providing feedback, organizing meetings and building relationships with Winnipeg’s downtown urban community.Applicants should have a flexible schedule and be available for pitch meetings, editorial meetings, section meetings and mentorship during the regular academic year (late-August to early December/January to April.) Daytime meetings usually happen on Thursdays.This position pays $250/week. The city editor will begin their term in late August.Skill Requirements:Should have at least 2 years experience in city/news-style writingMust have experience editingAbility to multitask, make decisions and work independentlyExcellent communication skills, oral and writtenKnowledge of google docsAbility to oversee, mentor and lead a team of staff and volunteersAbility to maintain deadlinesDuties:Work closely with managing editor to construct weekly story listsMust assign and collect writing assignments on a weekly basisMust ensure section is filled and balanced on a weekly basisProvide constructive feedback to contributors within sectionMust attend pitch and editorial meetingsWork closely with copy and style editor to ensure all work is factual and formatted properly for printPitch and write a cover feature once per semesterProvide leads/summaries for city briefsRelationship to colleagues:Reports to managing editor and business managerSupervises city reporter, campus reporter and volunteer writersCollaborates with copy and style editor, volunteer coordinator and photo teamPlease submit a resume, cover letter and two writing samples (maximum length for each: one page, single-spaced) by Tuesday, August 9 at noon.We thank all applicants, however only those shortlisted for an interview will be contacted.*Mouseland Press strives to be an equitable employer and will prioritize qualified applicants who belong to marginalized groups.
