THE UNITER IS SEEKING A COMMENTS EDITORThe Uniter is seeking an opinionated, politically-minded and well-connected person to fill the role of Comments Editor. This person should have experience and a passion for writing editorials and understand what it means to curate an opinion section of a newspaper.Successful candidates should feel comfortable running a team of contributors, assigning and editing their work, providing feedback, organizing meetings and building relationships with our local on- and off-campus community.Applicants should have a flexible schedule and be available for editorial meetings, section meetings and mentorship during the regular academic year (late-August to early December/January to April.) Most daytime meetings happen on Thursdays.This position pays $250/week.Skill Requirements:Should have at least 2 years experience writingMust have experience editingAbility to multi-task, make decisions and work independentlyExcellent communication skills, oral and writtenKnowledge of google docsAbility to oversee, mentor and lead a team of staff and volunteersAbility to maintain deadlinesDuties:Work closely with Managing Editor to review weekly pitchesMust assign and collect writing assignments on a weekly basisMust ensure section is filled and balanced on a weekly basisProvide constructive feedback to contributors within sectionMust attend pitch and editorial meetingsWork closely with Copy and Style editor to ensure all work is factual and formatted properly for printPitch and write a cover feature once per semesterRelationship to colleagues:Reports to managing editor and business managerSupervises columnists and volunteer writersCollaborates with copy and style editor, volunteer coordinator, illustrator, creative director and photo teamInterested parties should submit a resume including references and a cover letter by August 9, 2022.
