Job Description

Hiring Organization: West Broadway Community Organization (WBCO) is a not-for-profit organization that coordinates social and economic revitalization efforts in Winnipeg’s West Broadway neighbourhood.Associated Project: This position will support the Housing Outreach Partnership, a partnership with Westminster Housing Society. Westminster Housing Society is a registered charity with a mission to provide good quality housing to lower income tenants at rental rates they can afford. Westminster Housing Society rehabilitates and constructs housing stock in Winnipeg’s West Broadway and surrounding neighbourhoods. Westminster Housing Society properties are managed by S.A.M. (Management Inc.), a property management company. The Community Development Worker will work to connect tenants to one another and to their community. In this role, you will work with Westminster Housing Society tenants by organizing building-wide events, such as backyard BBQs, grocery store runs, and activities for children and families. Through building relationships with tenants, the Community Development Worker will also access and address individual and/or family needs, with the goal of improving and maintaining tenancies. The ideal candidate for this position will be personable, outgoing, understanding, and organized.Contract Details: $20/hour, 24 hours per week, six-month contract with possibility of extension. Comprehensive health and dental benefits package, paid vacation and sick time. Ideal start date is as soon as possible.Responsibilities

  • Plan and run building-wide events for Westminster Housing Society tenants: Organize and run community building events and activities for Westminster Housing Society tenants; welcome new tenants to the building; ensure Westminster Housing Society tenants are aware of and invited to all broader community events, programs, workshops, and activities.
  • Providing supports for Westminster Housing Society tenants: Help Westminster Housing Society tenants access/create a support network that could include support workers, agency workers, mental health services, EIA workers, tenant association, family members, and/or friends; identify and address issues and concerns with the goal of mediating conflicts between Westminster Housing Society tenants/management to try to solve issues as they arise and before they develop into bigger problems.
  • Support West Broadway Community Organization’s other housing programming: Work with West Broadway Community Organization staff to connect tenants to one another and to their community in buildings outside of Westminster Housing Society through activities such as door knocking, pamphleting, postering, and events.
Skills and Qualifications(Previously gained through lived experience, volunteer work, or professional work)
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate with diverse stakeholders including tenants, caretakers, property managers, social workers, and other housing agencies.
  • An awareness of issues facing low-income tenants.
  • Experience living and/or working in the inner city.
  • Experience in facilitation and/or mediation.
  • Ability to work well under pressure; to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Proven ability to be a highly organized and self-directed worker.
  • Preference given to applicants renting in Winnipeg’s inner city.
  • Preference given to applicants that reflect the diversity of West Broadway tenants; applicants from equity-seeking groups are welcome to self-identify in their application if they wish.
Work Conditions
  • The Community Development Worker will work no more than 7 hours per day; due to the nature of this position, job hours will be flexible (between the hours of 8:00AM-8:00PM Monday-Friday) to accommodate events and activities.
  • Work activities will take place remotely (from home), in West Broadway Community Organization’s office, and outside of the office (conducting outreach in buildings, visiting tenants, meetings, and events).
Due to the nature of this position, the following are required:
  • Ability to climb stairs.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 40 pounds.
  • Valid drivers license (candidates do not need their own vehicle).
