Job Description

POSITION AVAILABLETitle of Position: Core Literacy InternTerm: September 20th 2021 – March 31st 2022Location: Winnipeg, MBStart date: September 20th 2021Frontier College is a national, non-profit literacy organization that was founded in 1899. We work with children, teens, adults and families who need help to improve their literacy skills. We work with a variety of partner organizations to deliver volunteer-run, community-based programs across Canada. Frontier College is accredited under the Imagine Canada Standards program.The Core Literacy Intern will assist with the recruitment, training and supervision of volunteer tutors at various program sites in Winnipeg. The Core intern will be responsible for the planning and facilitation of literacy programs for learners at various community location in Winnipeg. In addition, the Core Literacy Intern will assist with administrative duties to support to the Winnipeg office.This role requires superior organizational, time management, planning, excellent technical skills and ability to work with a variety of computer programs. The Core literacy Intern will have solid communication and facilitation skills, the ability to create and maintain positive relationships with participants and the community. They will need to be flexible combined with a positive attitude in a demanding and dynamic work environment.Overall AccountabilityThe Intern reports directly to the Community and Camp Coordinator, MB and will work closely with other staff and volunteers inside and outside the Manitoba office.Major Duties and Responsibilities · Plan & deliver engaging activities and curriculum for afterschool and/or adult learning sessions, that may include up to 15-20 individuals at a time· Manage effective relationships with community partners· Provide ongoing support to a team of trained volunteer literacy tutors on-site· Facilitate the recruitment, screening and training of volunteer tutors· Help to organize volunteer recognition events, meetings, fundraisers, conferences, and special events· Prepare training materials and tutor/learner resources for programs· Conduct evaluations with tutors and learners· Help raise public awareness about Frontier College, its mandate and programsMajor Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrated experience working with groups of children, youth or families
  • Positive, friendly, and approachable disposition
  • Adaptable, self-motivated, responsible, enthusiastic, creative
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, lively and changing environment and independently when required
  • Proficiency with MS suite of office tools/document layout and design
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Highly organized and attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and public speaking skills
  • Understanding that hours will vary depending on the needs of the program
  • Respectful of diversity
  • Commitment to literacy work and the Frontier College mission statement
  • Valid Manitoba Driver License and access to a reliable vehicle is required

  • A valid First Aid Certificate
  • Previous knowledge and experience with Frontier College programs
