Job Description

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SUPPORT AND LEGAL SERVICES“A WOMAN’S PLACE”Nor’West Co-op Community Health CentrePOSITION: Support Worker, 1.0 EFT, PermanentGOALS:1. Help clients move along a continuum from dependence on the support worker, to interdependence with the support worker, to independence and strength on her own.2. Provide an intensive one-on-one support service that will assist high need women to access a broad array of services that are available to them in the community. In doing so, women will be assisted in:

  • Transitioning from a crisis-ridden life to a more stable and safe living arrangement.
  • Caring more effectively for themselves and their children; and
  • Becoming less dependent on social services over time.
POSITION SUMMARY:The support workers will provide linkages and support to women in abusive relationships who are struggling to use the services offered within various systems. The type of services offered to these women will be pragmatic and include accompanying women to appointments, advocating on their behalf when necessary, and being positive role models who encourage clients to live in abuse-free environments. The support workers will facilitate awareness of existing resources as well as provide support services where a gap exists. The support workers will function as part of a diverse team using an empowering, strength-focused, and holistic approach. The support workers will be aware of, and manage various cultural, social, economic and transformation barriers that exist for women leaving abusive relationships.QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Preferred education in a social service related field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working in the area of domestic violence.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Awareness of the dynamics of domestic violence.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Empathic, non-judgmental individual.
  • Knowledge of diverse cultures and economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively with community members and various community partner agencies in multiple areas.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently within the community with little direct supervision.
  • Commitment to working with women towards positive change.
  • Must have own car and valid driver’s license.
DUTIES:
  • Offer encouragement and reinforcement to promote self-care, self-reliance, and confidence for clients who are challenged with daily events and hurdles in order for them to leave abusive situations.
  • Provide information related to legal options, housing alternatives, parenting issues, social assistance, employment training and/or options and sources of support within the community.
  • Coordinate scheduling of appointments with community agencies and possibly home visits.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients and link them to existing resources.
  • Provide emotional support to women using an empathic, non-judgmental approach.
  • Accompany women to appointments as necessary and provide practical support in order for clients to achieve the task at hand.
  • Help women identify short- and long-term goals.
  • Be positive role models to women and volunteers.
  • Work with volunteers as needed.
  • Promote the program and collaborate with the team.
  • Work in accordance with Nor’West Co-op Community Health Centre’s policies and procedures to support the goals and objectives of the program.
  • Protection planning with clients and educate them on the cycle of violence by teaching various characteristics of abusive behavior.

  • Increased safety for women and their children
  • Awareness of legal, community, housing, social assistance, and employment-related/skill-building services
  • Awareness of and ability to access community supports and services
  • Reduced dependency on social services over time
  • Less children being taken into the care of child welfare agencies
  • Less isolation and an increased sense of well-being and empowerment for clients
  • Healthier lifestyles and an ability to assume more responsibility for the family
  • Understanding of Cycle of Violence, characteristics of abuse and protection plan in place.
