Ecological Restoration Program CoordinatorLocation: Winnipeg or Brandon, ManitobaPosition details: Full Time Contract (36 months)Taking care of our environment has never been more important than it is today. The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is looking for an experienced Ecological Restoration Manager to join a team committed to protecting our most important natural areas and the plants and animals they sustain.NCC is the nation’s leading not-for-profit, private land conservation organization, working to protect our most important natural areas and the species they sustain. With a national office in Toronto and seven regional offices across the country, NCC delivers results you can walk on.*Purpose and General Description: *The Ecological Restoration Program Coordinator role is an important member of the team, primarily supporting habitat and ecosystem process restoration activities, with a focus on the implementation of Natural Area Conservation and Property Management Plans in Manitoba. Externally, they will liaise with partners and volunteers. Internally, they will work closely and cooperatively with other Conservation Operations and Regional team members. The role involves technical and operational/administrative work as well as travel and independent fieldwork.*Duties and Responsibilities: **Ecological Restoration Program Coordination*

  • Coordinating Ecological Restoration Program activities under the direction of Manager of Stewardship Programs and in collaboration with Natural Area Managers, and other conservation and regional staff.
  • Providing theoretical and technical expertise on ecological habitat and process restoration in support of evidence and adaptive management-based landscape, property-level and multi-species at risk-focused strategies and plans.
  • Working with NCC conservation and regional staff, and conservation partners to develop and implement objective-based effectiveness monitoring of ecosystem process restoration.
  • Assisting the regional team in fundraising to support ongoing and future ecological restoration program implementation.
  • Review project budgets and provide expenditure updates.
*Planning and Project Implementation*
  • Assist with developing restoration plans for NCC properties and ensure plans are consistent across the region.
  • Overseeing habitat and ecosystem process restoration activities, including but not limited to site preparation, native planting and seeding, seed and propagule material collection, erosion control installation, herbicide application, prescribed fire or any other activities necessary with field implementation of ecological restoration projects as well as ongoing maintenance.
  • Procuring materials and equipment.
  • Assists with sourcing and coordinating fee for service contractors.
  • Collaborating with stewardship staff on species project planning.
*Program and Project Evaluation*
  • Working with NCC regional science and stewardship staff and conservation partners to develop and implement objective-based effectiveness monitoring of ecosystem restoration.
  • Conducting field work in support of new and ongoing habitat restoration projects, including: Identifying and managing non-native plant populations through a combination of herbicide application, hand-pulling, mowing, and mulching as well as serving on regional prescribed fire crew.
  • Conduct surveys and assessments of the status of ecosystems and species on NCC restoration sites and the effectiveness of conservation actions, as directed by Manager of Stewardship Programs.
  • Collecting and analyzing field data, presenting results and prepare mapping as required for stewardship planning and reporting;
  • Prepare reports for fieldwork and land management recommendations.
  • Conducting data management using GIS, Land Resource Management and other tracking systems and preparing technical reports.
*Staff Supervision and Support*
  • Working with interns, partners and/or volunteers when necessary.
  • Assisting with the coordination and delivery of Conservation Volunteer events as needed.
  • Working with regional science and stewardship staff in all aspects of restoration, including coordination of work plans.
*Required Skills and Attributes: *
  • Graduate with an agriculture, biology, ecology, forestry, or environmental science degree/diploma or equivalent. Bachelors Degree or higher is an asset;
  • Ecological restoration education or experience is required;
  • Reclamation experience or expertise is considered an asset but not required.
  • 2+ years of experience related to conservation and ecological restoration; leading field crews is an asset;
  • Experience with ecological restoration techniques and native and invasive species plant identification and/ or control techniques;
  • Demonstrated habitat and ecosystem process restoration experience;
  • Knowledge of ecosystem management practices, field methodology, and restoration ecology;
  • Working knowledge of Manitoba landscapes, communities, agricultural and conservation issues;
  • In-field navigation experience and skills;
  • Working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems, data management and the use of ArcMap to create maps for fieldwork and reporting a plus;
  • Ability to independently take a project from background research to action in a short period of time;
  • Familiarity with common computer software (Microsoft Office Suite);
  • Excellent writing and organization skills;
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to interact with the public to convey a conservation message, and work with agricultural producers and conservation partners;
  • English language required;
  • Wilderness or Standard First Aid Training;
  • Experience and ability to work outdoors in various terrain and under various weather conditions;
  • Willingness and ability to work in the field, often in strenuous conditions
  • Must complete NCC Manitoba’s current prescribed fire fitness standard – 2 mile (3.2km) hike in 30 minutes with 25 lbs backpack.
  • Manitoba Pesticide Applicator Certification or willingness to complete training to be licensed by NCC is an asset;
  • Basic Wildland Fire Management training (CCIFC - Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre) and Introduction to the Incident Command System (I-100 ICS) or willingness to be trained is an asset;
  • Experience operating truck/ trailer combinations and equipment such as tractors, ATVs, chainsaws; and
  • Experience with fundraising and grant writing, submitting grants and managing grants.
