Practice in word recognition is conducted in this course. Students will apply language learning in other skills to the development of vocabulary through reading and discussion activities. Reading strategies studies including skimming, scanning, predicting, guessing and reading for comprehension. There is a strong focus on vocabulary development and reading for pleasure.Students in the class will be attending through a variety of modes. There will be students attending class in person, with some attending class live through Zoom and others participating in the class at their own convenience.Responsibilities:

  • Course Preparation and Outline in accordance with Program requirements
  • Lesson / Lecture preparation
  • Attendance Management
  • Teaching
  • Tracking progress of students studying through different modes both in class and through alternate delivery
  • Student Contact
  • Participation in teacher-student events or activities, staff meetings and graduation ceremony
  • Preparation and invigilation of examinations
  • Marking and grading
  • Maintenance of class Nexus pages
  • Other duties as assigned
Education and Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree
  • TESL or CELTA required
  • Minimum of 800 hours experience in the following:
    • Teaching beginning to high-intermediate vocabulary acquisition and reading strategies through short academic-style texts
    • Instructing students to read beginning and intermediate level books and express their ideas in words
    • Teaching short stories, passages and books for the purpose of language learning
    • Instructing a multi-level class
    • Teaching how to write a reading journal
  • Ability to design and balance course content through a combination of student interest and key topics
  • Ability to introduce and explain meaning and usage of new vocabulary
  • Familiarity with different English accents
  • Experience teaching a multi-level class with different students’ needs and goals
  • Experience teaching English as an additional or foreign language to adults
  • Ability to adapt tasks and lessons to meet the diverse goals of the students
  • Ability to engage students whether they are in class or through alternate delivery
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, and conflict-resolution skills to deal effectively with a wide variety of situations
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and issues of a diverse student body
  • Varied teaching experience is considered an asset (in terms of skill, level, demographic, and location)
  • Strong computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with online tools and resources for teaching
  • Knowledge of a language additional to English considered an asset
