We work with children, teens, adults, and families who need help to improve their literacy skills. We work with a variety of partner organizations to deliver volunteer-run, community-based programs across Canada. Frontier College is accredited under the Imagine Canada Standards program.We are seeking a mature, responsible, committed, and self-motivated individual to fill the GAK Literacy Intern position with Frontier College.With funding from The Winnipeg Foundation, the GAK Literacy Intern will design and deliver afterschool literacy programs for students at Salisbury Morse Place School. The Literacy Intern will be responsible for supervising volunteers that will tutor and support the student’s literacy goals at the afterschool program.This role requires superior organizational, time management, planning, excellent technical skills and ability to work with a variety of computer programs. The literacy Intern will have solid communication and facilitation skills, the ability to create and maintain positive relationships with participants and the community. They will need to be flexible combined with a positive attitude in a demanding and dynamic work environment.Overall AccountabilityFrontier College Interns work very closely as a team with our partners, and Frontier College volunteers. All Frontier College positions work under the remote mentoring/supervision and report directly to the Community Coordinator, and/or Regional Manager.Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the recruitment and screening of volunteers to support programs
  • Develop and facilitate an after-school Reading Circle program to students in grades 1 to 5 (Two days a week 3:20 to 5:00pm, days to be determined)
  • Ensure proper and accurate collection of statistical information in order to report to funder during and at the end of the project
  • Ensure adherence to all program directives and deliverables while maintaining and working within a specified budget
  • Support special events in the school and community at large
Skills, Attributes and Requirements
  • Valid proof of COVID -19 vaccination or proof of medical exemption required for all in-person work
  • Demonstrated experience working with groups of children, youth or families
  • Experience with program planning and management
  • Positive, friendly, and approachable disposition
  • Adaptable, self-motivated, responsible, enthusiastic, creative
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, lively and changing environment and independently when required
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Highly organized and attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Understanding that hours will vary depending on the needs of the program
  • Respectful of diversity
  • Commitment to literacy work and the Frontier College mission statement
  • Valid Manitoba Driver License and access to a reliable vehicle
Additional Assets
  • A valid First Aid Certificate
  • Previous knowledge and experience with Frontier College programs
  • An interest in a career in teaching, social work, literacy/community development would be ideal
Screening & Selection: Candidates will be screened through:
  • Interview
  • Reference Checks (names & phone numbers of 3 references will be required)
  • Criminal Record Check (CRC) with a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) will be required
*Successful candidates are required to provide a current CRC (new or not older than 6 months from the term start date) with vulnerable sector search. Frontier College will cover the cost of the CRC and VSC (a receipt must be provided) *Compensation: $15.65 per hour, 10 hours per week.
