We are a proud member of the Co-operative Retailing System, a vast network of 160 retail Co-ops across western Canada.The OpportunityRed River Co-op is recruiting for the position of Human Resources Advisor at our home office located at 10 Prairie Way, in Winnipeg. This position reports to the Human Resources Manager.The Human Resources Advisor is a member of the Red River Co-op management team. They are responsible for providing leadership in the area of employee and labour relations, recruitment and onboarding, and the administration of HR policies.Essential responsibilities of the position include the following:

  • Provide guidance and advice, coaching, and direction to management and employees within the organization;
  • Administer, interpret, and ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements, co-operative policies and provincial labour and employment legislation;
  • Lead investigations into potential breaches of employment policies, human rights legislation, and other serious infractions;
  • Make recommendations on disciplinary matters, including suspensions and terminations;
  • Work with union representatives to resolve grievances;
  • Assist in the development and presentation of training programs;
  • Provide recruitment services for management and non-management positions at Red River Co-op, and work with department managers to deliver employee onboarding; and
  • Provide advice and assist managers in writing performance appraisals.

  • Above all else, human resources is a relationship business. You are someone who genuinely enjoys building meaningful connections with others. Your interactions with others are tactful, professional, and diplomatic. You are a good listener.
  • You have post-secondary education in human resources. You are a CPHR candidate or have earned your CPHR designation.
  • You have a minimum of five years of experience working in human resources, with a broad knowledge base encompassing several areas of functional HR. Labour relations is a large component of the role - it is essential that you have experience (leading investigations, providing advice on discipline matters, supporting managers in termination meetings, etc.) in this area.
  • You are highly computer literate, with a solid command of Microsoft Office applications. Familiarity with HR software such as Kronos, Ultipro, ADP, and Oracle is advantageous.
  • You have a strong work ethic and can manage a heavy workload with conflicting priorities.
  • You have both the capacity and interest to advance to a position of greater accountability within the human resources division at Red River Co-op.
  • You are comfortable with public speaking and delivering training presentations to small and large audiences.
  • You have both the ability and the willingness to contribute in all areas of HR, from operational to strategic in nature.
  • You have excellent communication skills. You have the ability to provide clear verbal instruction and explanation, both in person and over the phone. You write in a clear and concise manner. Your written work is well-edited (grammar, spelling and formatting) and professional.
  • Previous experience working for a retail company (whether in human resources, management, or a customer facing role) would be considered an asset.
  • You have access to a vehicle and a valid driver’s license, as travel to our locations (Winnipeg and nearby communities) is an essential component of the role.
