Job Description

As the Branch Head Librarian, you will have the exciting opportunity to manage a library and actively promote the services of Winnipeg Public Library for the City of Winnipeg. As the Branch Head Librarian, you will:

  • Supervise the work of the Branch staff including training and evaluating their performance
  • Plan and schedule the work within the Branch
  • Provide information and reference services to adults and children
  • Participate in collection maintenance and development, ensuring proper processing and repair of materials and book sale as required
  • Participate in the preparation, delivery and/or promotion of library materials, and services such as regular story hours, Branch programs, displays, etc.
  • Prepare monthly statistical reports
  • Make recommendations regarding the maintenance and physical appearance of the Branch
  • Handle contentious interpretations of library rules and regulations
  • Participate as a member of a group of colleagues in discussing and making recommendations regarding library procedures
  • Identify community needs and plan programs and collection development to meet those needs
  • Engage with the community to build Library awareness
  • Perform other duties consistent with the classification, as required
Your education and qualifications include:
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Library Science (M.L.S. or B.L.S.)
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and supervise the work of others
  • Thorough knowledge of library procedures and materials
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with the public and staff
  • Must possess a good general knowledge of literature and a variety of subject areas as well as knowledge of current affairs and trends
  • Good planning and organizational skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that are applicable to the area of work
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Policy
  • Must have successfully completed the following courses, or be prepared to complete within one year:
    • “Foundations of Supervisory Development” or “Workplace Leader”
    • Safety Responsibilities for Supervisors/Managers”
    • Diversity in the Workplace – The Role of the Supervisor/Manager”
