Job Description

As the Adult Literacy Instructor, you will oversee the WELL Program at Harvey Smith Library and foster a positive and welcoming learning space. You will assess and intake learners, instruct in the WELL classroom, provide referrals to supports and other literacy and learning programs and maintain the records required for operating the program.As the Adult Literacy Coordinator / Instructor, you will:

  • Oversee all day to day operations of an Adult Literacy Program including coordination and instruction.
  • Recruit, make referrals, and provide intake of adult learners.
  • Create lesson plans, individualized student learner plans, and curriculum design applying the principles of adult learning theory and the Manitoba Stages Framework for multi-level learners.
  • Provide quality instruction using best practices in reading, writing, numeracy, computer and document use.
  • Conduct ongoing learner assessments to assess learner progress.
  • Enthusiastically motivate students to achieve their goals.
  • Refer learners to mental health, financial and employment supports, as needed.
  • Write grants and prepare reports, budgets, and statistical tracking.
  • Develop and maintain program policies, records, documentation, and files.
  • Network and actively promote the program with community agencies and others.
  • Recruit, train, and direct volunteer tutors.
  • Select learning resources for the Adult Literacy Program.
Your education and qualifications include:
  • Undergraduate degree or the equivalent in training and experience.
  • Meets Manitoba Competency Standard for Adult Literacy Instructors (Level 1 certificate)
  • 2 years’ experience in instruction in an Adult Literacy Program or in an Adult Learning Centre.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience instructing within the Manitoba Stages Framework.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience instructing within the context of Essential Skills.
  • Understanding and ability to apply Adult Learning Principles using a learner-centered approach.
  • Training and experience in adult literacy assessment and evaluation.
  • Training and experience in developing and implementing individualized learning plans and portfolios.
  • Ability to provide engaging presentations and assist in creation of promotional materials.
  • Responsive and adaptable to different learning styles, cultures and perspectives.
  • Excellent communication skills and knowledge of English reading, writing, and numeracy.
  • Must possess good planning, decision making, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Proficient in budgeting, reporting and grant writing.
  • Proficient in computers including MS Office.
  • Knowledge of volunteer management.
  • Ability to be flexible in scheduling.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Policy.
  • Certificate in Mental Health First Aid, ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) and WEVAS (Working Effectively with Violent and Aggressive States) or Non-Violent Crisis Intervention an asset.
