Job Description

The Wilderness Committee has an exciting opportunity for a passionate organizer and environmental activist interested in becoming part of our dynamic and diverse team across the country. This Campaign Assistant position is based in our Winnipeg field office, and is a full-time 37.5 hours/week, 6-month term position with the possibility of extension.The Wilderness Committee is a grassroots, people powered, wilderness preservation group that has a history of more than 40 years on the front line of environmental battles across Canada, with offices in Vancouver, Victoria, Winnipeg and Toronto. Recognizing that enshrining Indigenous rights and title is fundamental to addressing the biodiversity and climate crises, we have helped protect millions of hectares of wilderness, defended the most at-risk species in government offices and court rooms, and worked tirelessly to fight irresponsible fossil fuel development wreaking havoc on the climate as we advocate for a just transition to a post-carbon society.As the successful candidate, you have proven experience engaging with the public on social justice issues. You are excited about organizing outreach events — paying attention to every last-minute detail — and conversing with the public on critical campaign issues. Your able to travel to different communities to inform and motivate people to get involved in different ways, and excel at educating others via face-to-face, phone, and digital communications in a compelling way that builds momentum to make a difference. You are looking for your next position in the fight for environmental and social justice.As the Wilderness Committee Manitoba Campaign Assistant, it is your responsibility to:

  • Coordinate campaign outreach activities, including organizing events in other cities and, communities, coordinating rallies, attending presentations and networking events
  • Outreach to the public to educate, inform and motivate people to take action on critical issues
  • Collaborate on written communications and promotional materials, contributing writing, editing and fact-checking skills to producing popular education materials
  • Amplify in-person strategies with digital communications, including the WC website, digital action tools and social media accounts
  • Participate in field excursions as necessary
  • Attend meetings with allies and support collaborative activities as prioritized with the Wilderness and Water Campaigner in Manitoba
  • Support the door-to-door and phone canvasses on the ground in Winnipeg
  • Coordinate the Wilderness Committee Manitoba office, respond to phone, email, drop-in and mail inquiries
  • Other duties as determined strategic to advance campaigns
You will:
  • Have at least 2 years’ experience (paid or unpaid) in a non-profit organization in the environmental or other social justice movement
  • Have proven experience in outreach and public engagement
  • Be detail oriented, well organized and able to coordinate activities and events involving multiple tasks and timelines
  • Be an excellent communicator, both oral and written, and a people person with strong relationship building skills
  • Have a passion for digital communications, promotions and engagement
  • Be adept at technology
  • Have experience working with volunteers
  • Have a class 5 driver’s license
